581  Re: Missing "My Craftster" in Craftster Itself by phoenixfiredesigns on: August 10, 2009 02:54:54 PM
Whoops, I just posted that I'm having the same problem. (Then I saw this thread.)

Copy of what I said on the other thread:

I don't see the "my craftster" link (the one in the yellow tape measure) on most pages anymore. I don't see it when posting a new topic, I don't see it when I'm in my personal messages and I don't see it when I'm on my bookmarks. I DO see it when I'm browsing the main community page or random topics.

WITH - Taken on Community Home Page

(Articles -> My Craftster -> Calendar)

WITHOUT - Taken on My Bookmarks Page

(Articles -> Calendar -> City Guides)

Er, is this just me? Huh

FYI: I'm at work on Firefox 3.0.13 and all the stuff clears each time I close so there are no old cookies or anything.

582  First try at a Steampunk pendant - bicycles, watches and more oh my! in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by phoenixfiredesigns on: August 06, 2009 06:06:59 PM
So I'm doing a swap in another group and it's a $10 craft challenge. You need to spend no more than $10 on craft supplies. She likes steampunk stuff and I thought I'd try to make a necklace for her. First off, while it's easy to see a finished piece and say, "ah, that's steampunk!" it's really hard to get there. It's especially hard finding components that fit in with the vague idea in your head.

I found this ugly desk clock that had a removable face that was cool at Goodwill, so I bought it for $4. Then I found this cool old fashioned bicycle charm that was $6 with a 40% off coupon (net $3.60). I also got a $2 chain at Goodwill that I used one strand for it. I had the jump rings and other findings used. Total $9.60!

I think it's really fun. It's simpler than I think I originally intended but I'm still pretty happy with it. It just finished drying so the shots aren't great lighting (I normally take my pics in the daylight) but I was eager to show it off and get some feedback.

I hope she likes it. Thoughts welcome! Grin

583  Re: Ongoing Wish Swap Round 47 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by phoenixfiredesigns on: August 03, 2009 12:54:19 PM
I received my package from scaramouche today. She sent me a hand painted phoenix canvas, a hand carved phoenix stamp, plus a bunch of fun extras like a Mickey notebook, Belle keychain, chocolate, candy, and tea.

Here's everything:

Close ups:

I love that you used the "Potter Puffs" Fawkes image from an item in my wists for the stamp. I think it's just the cutest version of Fawkes. Grin And the extras like the candy and tea definitely look yummy. Thank you so much for your creativity! Everyone knows how much I love getting phoenix items!  Cheesy

584  Re: Bubble Tree #3 - Midnight Blue with Pearls (Winter) in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by phoenixfiredesigns on: July 31, 2009 08:31:14 AM
I'd never seen ToL pendants before, but looking at this makes me want to see everything you've ever made -  so beautiful!
Thank you! This is a newer style/take on it for me but I'm really grooving on it myself. Cheesy

Wow that's a lot smaller than it looks and it's gorgeous. That must have taken a lot of patience.
I've made so many Trees at this point that I actually really enjoy the process now. Learning to be comfortable with the wire in general though was definitely an act of patience! Cheesy

Lovely, simply stunning!
But I have a question...
Since you have made it SO dimensional (and it seems maybe a little almost top-heavy), does it hang straight, or does the mass at the top affect the way it hangs? Or am I just confusing it with problems of bigger, chunkier pieces?
Thanks for the compliment. And yeah I hear what you're saying but honestly, it still lays nice and flat. If you'll forgive my terrible skin, I'll show you a quick shot worn for reference:

(There's a reason I try to never model my own items!) I think the weight of the piece (not that it's heavy) is pretty balanced so despite being "dimensional" it still sits nicely.

I just love this.  I particularly love the bend in the trunk, it makes it look like a good and gnarly old tree.  With your trees, tehy always look like they have grown not been made.  Wink
Thanks! That's such a lovely compliment. Yeah I love trying to put a little personality in them.  Cheesy

585  Teeny, Tiny Miniature Tree of Life Cell Phone Charms in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by phoenixfiredesigns on: July 30, 2009 11:42:38 AM
Isn't everything cuter in miniature? Even super tiny Tree of Life pendants! These require some patience and steady hands because they are SO LITTLE. It's the same technique as the full scale ones but on a wee scale. My Samsung Messager cell phone is assisting with the modeling today. Wink

Genuine Peridot Gemstone with Black Wire Frame and Copper Wire Trunk
Peridot is August's Birthstone and just the most amazing spring green color!

Genuine Amethyst Gemstone with Silver Frame and Copper Wire Trunk
Amethyst is February's birthstone and these stones are a lovely purple-blue tone.

As always, thoughts welcome! Grin

586  Bubble Tree #3 - Midnight Blue with Pearls (Winter) in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by phoenixfiredesigns on: July 29, 2009 02:35:43 PM
Following up on my last bubble tree which has received such positive feedback, I made another in the same type of style but this time in a really pretty midnight (navy) blue and two colors of glass pearl. It looks so Winter to me - cold and beautiful like ice. The blue wire is a little hard to photograph, but it's a deep, striking color.

A handmade square frames the piece which features eight branches of glass pearl "leaves." Two colors of pearl - a bright white and a light champagne - are used in several sizes to give the piece variation and interest.

The piece is highly dimensional with a great growth up out of the confines of the frame.

With US Quarter for size reference.

I think it's just lovely. (I admit I might be biased though! Cheesy ) Comments greatly appreciated!

587  Re: Ongoing Wish Swap Round 48 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by phoenixfiredesigns on: July 23, 2009 01:26:28 PM
I received my great package from spectrumsparksie today! She claimed me for a key fob and some beading mags but she send TWO fobs, two little zip cases and three awesome beading mags.

Here's everything:

And a close-up of the handmade goodies:

The fabrics are very lovely. And what a pleasant surprise to receive TWO fobs plus TWO little zip pouches. The pink one is a rounded style - really neat - and the blue one is a more traditional rectangle with beaded accent on the zipper. The blue key fob also has a magnetic snap to open the loop up.

The mags are FULL of great photos, projects and step-by-step directions. I've already been nosing through them and it's great stuff.

Thank you so much! Grin

I received not one but TWO lovely packages yesterday. Please excuse the crappy photos. It was overcast today and the lighting was crappy in my apartment when I went to take pics.

From SAHMama - she made me a button flower zip pouch from my list AND a surprise Mickey drawstring backpack! (I swear it's not as small as it looks in the pic. It's like the perfect size to carry all the stuff you need for the day.)

The little zip pouch is perfect. And super cute. But the surprise Mickey drawstring rocks! I am SO going to have fun taking that to Walt Disney World with me!

Oh and the zipper pouch has the funkiest and coolest interior fabric:

Thank you so much SAHMama! I love them both. Grin

The other package was a complete surprise because gamemom42 claimed me for a surprise. I had no idea what was going to be in the oversized box waiting for me in the apartment office this morning. (It was too big for the mail box!) Turns out it was a cool penguin plush!

She named him Dexter and I think that's a great name for him. It's hard to see scale in the photo - again, crappy lighting, sorry - but he's a good 15" tall or so.

Also included were a neat assortment of beads:

Thank you gamemom42! He's really cute and you can never go wrong with a penguin! Especially one handmade just for you. Grin

I love getting happy mail!

589  Bubble Tree #2 - Tree of Life Pendant with Brown and Copper Wire and Glass Pearl in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by phoenixfiredesigns on: July 15, 2009 02:58:55 PM
I LOVE this one. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I love it so much I think for once, I'm keeping this one all for myself.  Cheesy I plan on making others like it since it's just so pretty, but this specific one is all mine. Grin

Following up on my first Bubble Tree here, I picked up some new glass pearls in different colors and came up with this one.

Brown wire outer square frame with copper wire roots, trunk and branches. Two colors of glass pearl in three sizes are used as the "leaves." I just LOVE the combination of colors.

It's also beautifully dimensional. It really pops up from it's frame.

For size reference

Ever make something and just be so enamored with it and so excited by how well it came out? That's this piece for me. I've made probably over a hundred Trees in the past year but man, this has to be in my top five favorites of all time. I've already worn it a few times to work because it's just such a striking piece.

Thoughts and feedback welcome!

590  Lemon Tree - Tree of Life Pendant w/Green Aventurine and Yellow Glass Lemons in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by phoenixfiredesigns on: July 13, 2009 12:19:32 PM
Following up on the Apple Tree and the Orange Tree, here's the next in the Fruit Tree line - a Lemon Tree!! This was another suggestion from a commenter and I do aim to please. Grin (Don't worry - I know there were more suggestions and I'm working on 'em!)

This Lemon Tree pendant is handmade using painstaking wire-wrapping techniques. A gold wire frame encircles the pendant, and is then used as the roots, trunk and branches of the tree.

Green Aventurine is a natural gemstone containing a large quantity of quartz. Considered the stone of luck and chance, it's also said to increase your perception and insight. It's also the stone associated with the heart chakra.

Nestled into the Green Aventurine leaves are five glass "lemons" made of vivid yellow, fire-polished glass beads. This makes for a lovely, warm, citrus color combination reminiscent of a tall glass of cool lemonade on a hot summer day.

I think it's very fun. And I drank a glass of lemonade making it so I think that helped inspire me. Wink

As always, thoughts appreciated!
