hey everyone! macfab fabrics (600 queen st w, @bathurst) is having a huge basement blowout sale from november 15th to the 23rd! it won't be any of their fancy upstairs stuff, but everything from the basement is selling at cheap give-away prices.
quilters! there are tons of discontinued sample squares!
also! if you're a student, make sure you come by on saturday the 15th cuz it's the only day to get an orange discount card, by presenting your student ID, to get 25% off all year!
i know there are already a few photos of cats, and i know i have other macro photos to dig through, but since i just took this one the other day and it's already on my computer (not my boyfriend's) i figured, i might as well use it. plus i can show off one of my gorgeous kitties.
squiggle in the sunshine!
isn't she cute
and this next photo is NOT FOR THE CHALLENGE. i just really liked it and wanted to share. i would have used it for the challenge, but i'm not 100% sure if i took it or if my boyfriend did (we share our camera and take a lot of pictures of the same things)
thanks for looking, don't forget to vote! and check out all the entries, they're all gorgeous
The dress pattern is in the book Crochet Me as well as in the April issue of Interweave Crochet as a feature.
I won't be starting mine for a few weeks due to too many WIP's but i thought we could all start discussing yarn and things and those ladies who were ready to start could go ahead. I think i'm going to do mine in blue so i can wear it to work (only black, white, grays and blues are allowed )
i've noticed in the past month or so a greater number of people asking for patterns or tutorials when people post a completed project. and once one person asks, every single reply after that is "i'd love one too!"
i thought that this wasn't allowed by the craftster rules? a few weeks ago i re-checked the rules and the not asking for tutes one was still there, so why all these people breaking the rules? and why's it happening now all of a sudden? sometimes it's newbies, and that i understand cuz they don't know the rules yet, but i've seen members with over 100 posts still asking for tutes.
also, i've wondered about the etiquette of telling people it's not allowed. i feel like that's totally not my place, but is this a big enough deal to report to moderators?
the other night i just happened to be walking past the bead store and when i went in, not really intending on buying anything, i found these amazing stones! they have fossils on them, like when you find rocks with fossils on the beach.
(sorry about the cat hair )
made with purplish shell beads
and the other one - oranges!
with matching bracelet. made with faux pearls, i think?
isn't it gorgeous? i love how it looks like paisley
this is another necklace i made, i can't remember what the stone is called
and this bracelet matches the previous necklace as well as the first fossil one
hooray! i made the last necklace i posted first, and loved that it could go with basically anything, so i made the darker fossil one for the same reason and i love them all!
so we have this friend, kristy, who we love a crapton of a lot. and she loves my boyfriend and i just the same. she's now working on cruise lines in the carribean, making us jealous in our toronto snow storms.
nevertheless, she's leaving now for 5 months and that's a long time for us to go without seeing her, or her seeing us. so i made her some dolls of us so it's like we're there with her
so this is todd, the boy:
and his face and hair and shirt
and this is me:
and my curly hair:
i made these pretty quick, and just glue gunned the hair on. they were made pretty sloppily, to be honest, but she loved them. i didn't get a picture of them side by side, but they're proportionately the right height to each other (my bf's a giant at 6'5" and i come up to his chin)
if anyone wants to know how i did the curly hair: i had an unfinished crochet project sitting around for a year and when i frogged it, the yarn retained the curlies! yay
hello! this is my first ever entry in a challenge. my biggest resolution for this year is to craft more. the biggest obstacles in the way of my crafting, is that i'm terribly unorganized and lose track of projects, and that i can't manage my time at all. so i was already planning to make a craft journal, to plan and keep track of every project i do, and this challenge was the perfect thing to kick my butt into action.
i really wanted this to be more interesting than blank pages, so it was also the perfect opportunity to try out some new photoshop brushes i downloaded recently
onto the photos!
i ended up making two books, one as the main craft planner/calendar/log, and the other small one as a portable book for ideas, material/shopping lists, doodling, etc
a page inside the little one:
the inside front cover and first page of the main journal:
another page, and how it opens
the ribbon is what holds the whole thing together. i didn't want to deal with punching a lot of holes through the book board for sewing, and i wanted a way to add pages if and when i have to, so hole punch and ribbon it was
here are what the pages all look like. i don't want to overload this thread, so i'll just use thumbnails
inspiration and ideas:
completed projects (this will act as a table of contents as well as a quick reference list)
and finally project pages (these are the main bulk of the book)
there are also calendar pages for a full year, one of which you can see in one of the above photos. if anyone wants to know what's on each page and they can't read it, just lemme know.
ok, there it is! i had a lot of fun with this challenge, and thank you to leah for giving me the motivation i needed!
i can't wait to see everyone else's entries! don't forget to vote!
these are half of the gifts for my grandma, mom and sister (they're also getting crocheted slippers/scarves)
because they were gifts, it meant i got to go to the fancier half of arton beads and buy more expensive stones than normal (i usually just stick to glass, wood, etc). yay!
for my mom, who is a hippy and loves earth tones, and is allergic to metal (the clasp thingies are actually plastic):
i used an amazonite stone and some shell beads/stones
and how it hangs:
this is for ma gramma:
i haven't seen my g-ma in years and don't know her tastes very well so i really hope she likes this. it's a fire jade**jasper stone and some kinda shiny beads
and how it hangs:
and for my little sister:
she *loves* blue, and i just got her into jewelery making as well so i think she'll like it a lot. the flower is made from shell, and there are fresh water pearls on the danglies.
and how it hangs:
and all of them together in their pretty little boxes:
hooray! sorry about all the photos, these are definitely the nicest pieces i've made yet and i'm super proud this is also just after i discovered the macro setting on my camera.. i love taking jewelery photos now!
**ETA: i just looked up fire jade and it doesn't look anything like this.. maybe this stone was in the fire jade box? if anyone knows what that stone is, please let me know thanks darkdaughter!
my favourite thing to do with a computer has always been drawing in ms paint. these are all the ones i did on my friend's computer a few years ago. i wish i still had an ms paint but now i have a mac and i don't have a mouse i like
i recently got these back from that friend, so i thought i would share the amazing things you can do with a simple program
the first, i asked a friend for an animal (coyote) and another friend for a place (victorian england)
this is the view of york university from my apartment on a rainy day
this one uses a quote from cowboy bebop
and here are some stick people, but i love the colours
[ETA: i'm really confused! i thought i posted this under the general hallowe'en board because i only just now found out about the challenge entries and i was going to make a post here for that but couldn't find my original post...did someone move this here or am i going crazy?? help!
also, as this is now an entry i guess, though i did make both our costumes, since my boyfriend's shirt wasn't handmade (the rest was, though) it's okay if this entry is just for my costume and not his.]
so the day after hallowe'en last year, my boyfriend and i woke up and were petting our kittens in bed and said boyfriend todd decided we should have gone as our cats for hallowe'en since we have one girl and one boy, and we are one girl and one boy. so this year, we did it!!
here are our cats for reference
(black and white is moxley, the boy, and the calico is squiggle)
and this is us!
me (with squiggle)
i made: -my dress from a sheet -my "shawl" (okay, i just cut a rectangle into a triangle) -my "legwarmer" (you can see it in the pic of me with squiggle. she's got a spot in that spot on her leg.) -my purse to match another squiggle spot (it's not in any pictures but it turned out wicked. just a circle with straps on it) - out of a weird velvet outfit that was brown and black -my tail (also out of that weird shirt/pants combo) -my ears (out of a scarf) -todd's pants (out of a sheet - i just made the thai fisherman's pants cuz he wanted 'em anyway) -todd's cape, ears, tail (all out of an old blanket)
and i painted our faces cuz i used to do it professionally at canada's wonderland. the paint we used was real cheap though so that's why it looks kinda terrible
i bought all the material from a goodwill and a sally ann up the street and i think i only spent under $20 if you don't count the white tights that i wanted anyway. and since october went crazy fast and hallowe'en totally snuck up on me, i made everything in a couple evenings and one full saturday
hooray! tomorrow i'm not working and i don't have any plans, but i do plan on waking up and putting this on for the whole day!
thanks for getting this far! comments definitely appreciated.
