1  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Re: Fiber Friday Feb 6 on: February 06, 2009 09:55:49 AM
fiber friday always makes my day. I tend not to have something to post, but it is, without fail, an inspiration of color and texture. Thank You!

My uncle retired from 30 years in Public Heath Service last week and it called for something special. He loves sock monkeys and it all fell into place from there.

The fleeces(brown and white) came from a wonderful lady in Jamul. I say this is somewhere between a dk and sport weight, knits up nicely on 3's. The red is my fist kool-aid dye job.

I had a very hard time handing him over. thank goodness i have enough fleece for an army of sock monkeys... oo that sounds like fun.

I finished up 2 projects that have been waiting patiently... 4 oz of indigo dyed merino, and the rest (3.75 z) of some super soft alpaca i got from bodega.
I'm still working on Love's fleece little by little.

and I combed/spun/knit up a sample of a grey alpaca fleece that was gifted to me

I have one for this week. wooo.  I bought the fleece from a local farm, and the sheep's name is Lovey.
This is my first hand-combed spinning project and I LOVE it. So far I have about 250 yards, but there is a pound+ more to go.

a knit sample to see if I wanted to blend it a little more.

Thanks Smiley   the monkey quilt was a quick and dirty job i did a couple weeks ago for the couch. i LOVE the sock monkey fabric by moda. fatquartershop.com was having a sale on the flannel squares, so i had to grab some. I had a decent experience with the company, though the communication was a little on the sparse side, and something that was in stock on the site when i ordered was not available when they shipped it to me. Sad oh well.

7  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Re: Child Costume: Do or Do Not ... there is no try. on: June 16, 2008 02:23:55 PM
that is the cutest darn thing! SO CUTE! thank you so much for posting, My friend was hosting a star wars movie party/movie screening and had a costume contest to go along with it. I wasn't sure what to do until I saw that hat. After an all night sewing binge the pattern was made and I had a hat. not so stiff interfacing for the ears makes it more of a doby hat than a yoda hat, but it added to the charm Smiley

theme of Alpaca:
coco&caramel: from roving i bought in Bodega, CA about 8oz spun up:

i bought fleeces in Jamul, CA. 1 cria, and 2 adult.

a sampler i made from the fleeces:

the cria is sooo soft and lovely, but the adults are kinda scratchy, the middle one i don't know what i will do with, being so incredibly scratchy and all. maybe give the spun stuff to my mom to weave a rug.

i *heart* the bamboo Smiley

Ooo such pretty lovelies from everyone this week!..

here's what i've been whirling away at:
blue inego. i haven't had this many problems with fiber. i'm hoping knitting it up won't be such a struggle.

directly off the wheel this morning(i got laughed at by my boy when he walked out of the shower to me feverishly finishing the plying) and a shaky hand taking the image in low light..superwash merino which he bought on a business trip to Atlanta last weekend, 7-8 oz.. black with white highlights...he is looking forward to the hat.. or 3 it will make Smiley

le baby alpaca is waiting for me to spin up the rest.. it is such a  dream to spin. it flows out of the hands its amazing.

I'm so very excited.. my first fiber friday post.. i've been oggling for weeks at the lovely yarn thats been produced. i recently picked up my spinning wheel from home( ashford traveler that i got back in 6th grade while in 4-H)
here is my first round. i got the ball winder last night...and had a little fun. *cough* maybe too much fun.

i'm not exactly sure what type of sheepie the to wools are, i got them in Bodega, CA (you know where curch from 'the birds' is located) they were having some Christmas fair the day after thanksgiving and i grabbed a paper shopping bag full of the brown stuff(batting, all sorts of fiber length.. not the best to spin.. but very cheap and perfect for a beginner run) and the white roving.. for $20.i've barely made a dent in each. *squee* plying is a crazy amount of fun. but i think i'm going to have to get another flyer so i can do a bit more chunky stuff..

and for added fun.. i made plastic yarn.. actually i was just going ot do the loop method and then crochet it.. but after a few chains.. i decided to spin it.. why not eh?

it has been nice to spin a bobbin after a 12 hour day...
