11  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / this is prolly a really stupid question...(pattern reading question) on: October 14, 2007 06:33:46 AM
yay another newb question  Cry Cry

ok this is going to be a bit hard to explain but please bear with me...when following  a pattern it says to do x amount of stitches in the same stitch, like so

(dc, ch1, dc, ch1, dc) in first stitch...

ok now my question is WHERE do i put them...do i put them in the stitch i just made like would i

A) double crochet and then in that double crochet i chain 1 and then double crochet into that chain and so on and so forth

or would i

B)in the first stitch do a double crochet, move next to that dc i just made, but still staying in the first stitch and then ch1 and then next to that ch1 i just made but again still staying in the same first stitch, do my next double crochet and so on and so forth.

so basically my question is do i work my stitches next to each other or do i work them into each other hopefully someone can figure out what im asking. its confusing me to even write it!
12  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / My first swatches!!!!! IM SO EXCITED! on: October 13, 2007 06:32:56 AM
YAY!!!
after throwing my hooks several times and giving up in the past i finally sat down with my copy of the happy hooker and swore i would learn myself some crochet...AND I DID!!!!! i taught myself the single, half double, double and triple crochet!! after months and months of watching movies and trying to have my family teach me and just getting overall really frustrated, i read a couple posts on here regarding good books. well let me say the HH is fabbo. i can NEVER learn from books, but this one was different and so easy to understand. i love it. my mom actually stole my first copy yesterday afternoon on our visit so I had to go out last night and buy a 2nd one Cheesy thank you HH!!

on to the pics...please tell me how I did...

13  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / newbie questions and issues on: October 05, 2007 07:04:50 AM
hello there...i have just recently really wanted to start crochet hardcore to make cute little stuffies. annnyways...so i tried to teach myself by watching videos and i sort of think i got it...i made a coffee cozy but like an idiot i did it all out of slip stitches. it worked but i think it would have been cuter done right.

my mother tried to show me how to crochet in a circle and after getting totally pissed off and throwing my hook, i went home to my place and just sat and went over what she showed me and i got it which was how i was able to do my cozy but omg it was all slip stitches which i read is totally wrong to do but it really does look nice and tight. i found that doing slip stitches come out almost identical looking[on the backside of my work]  to doing the regular knit[stockinette] on my knifty knitter. is that normal?

now i have a question...all of those cute little amiguriurmi [sp] are made out of single crochet for the most part? how do you get them so tight and not holey. i almost favor the slip stitch because it comes out so tight but almost too tight and my single crochet comes out all holeyesque. Cry Cry

i just bought the happy hooker after months of refusing to buy any sort of book and its great but i basically had to reteach myself turning my work and starting off a chain the "right way". for a while i was going through one loop of the v on a chain to start my stitches and i would slip stitch the entire way down and back. after reading the first few chapters of HH i read to go through both V loops. i really am totally uncomfortable doing it bu it does make it look prettier. am i able to do it the way i was doing before by going through one loop? its so much easier. she says you can but you end up with big loops but for me i seem to have bigger loops doing it the other way going through both v's. when i get home i will try to post pics of my cozy and the swatch of practice im working on now. i mean do some people just have ways of doing things that work for them and not necessarily the norm?
