22  COOKING / Dessert / Congrats RN cake on: August 13, 2008 03:52:15 PM
I threw a BBQ to celebrate my successful completion of my licensing exam ( which makes me a registered nurse ), and since i couldn't bake my own cake since my over is vintage and broken, i just had to buy a cake, but i'd be darned if i wasn;t going to decorate it with a stethoscope. i really wanted to make the "R" letter wear a nurse cap, but i didn't get any red icing,

it's nothing special, and it didn't even taste great, but it's my first attempt at " decorating " a cake.

24  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Re: Round Skirt help on: August 05, 2008 10:21:17 PM
there are very quick ways of making a petti coat. make a slip-like skirt, and just gather the heck out of tulle. and attach it to the bottom. the added poof on the bottom will help keep the skirt up.

to make the skirt, just cut out a doughnut shape. add elastic to waist casing.
25  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / what to do with border print fabric? on: August 05, 2008 10:17:34 PM
i bought a few gorgeous fabrics with a border print on top and bottom, and while i was looking at the fabric i knew that i would have a hard time actualy utilizing it, but i still bought it anyway.

well, a few days ago i decided to sew a dress using one of the fabrics and it was an absolute nightmare. all the skirts arch at the hem and all the bodices arch on the top. how in the heck do you use fabric with a straight border?

and pattern advices?

i know you can just gather the skirt, but i don't fit well into puffed skirts.

27  COOKING / Dessert / Re: help.. looking for icing recipe on: July 31, 2008 11:14:59 PM
can't be buttercream. buttercream doesn't fluff well because it is one of the heavier icings. however it is used a lot in cupcakes.

a fluffier icing ( and more delicious in my opinion ) is 7 minute frosting http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/ideal-seven-minute-frosting?autonomy_kw=7%20minute%20frosting&rsc=header_2

and also my fave ( and VERY fluffy ) http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.fc77a0dbc44dd1611e3bf410b5900aa0/?vgnextoid=ebff89ee286e8110VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&vgnextfmt=default&rsc=also_try
28  COOKING / Dessert / Re: rose cake :D on: July 31, 2008 11:04:23 PM
roses on a cake are my absolute favorite!

it's a childhood memory for me, in ukraine we didn't have fancy fondant cakes, and every cake ALWAYS had the most delicious roses on it. and of course, if you were the birthday child, you  would get the piece with the rose on it/

god, how i wish to be 5 again. or atleast have a piece of cake with a rose on it.
