11  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / reupholstery blog... check it out! on: November 08, 2004 02:56:28 PM
hey everyone,

my mom has started a big project... reupholstering a pair of loveseats (originally bright yellow and very 60's). and she's chronicling her progress in a weblog! I thought you guys might be inerested in seeing it. Right now she is still in the "taking everything apart" stages... but if you are interested in seeing how a couch is put together, she has been taking pictures through the whole process.

If anyone has suggestions for her, that's awesome! you should leave her a comment (in the link under each post).

here's a before picture of couch#1:

12  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / corduroy-paisley birthday bag! on: November 02, 2004 09:17:30 PM
I made this bag tonight while watching election coverage and avoiding homework. It's a birthday present for my friend Marian. The pictures really don't do the bag justice, I think it looks a lot nicer in real life. This is only my second bag so I'm pretty proud of it even though it isn't fancy.

The outside is a purplish-brown corduroy and the inside is paisley patterned fabric. I also put a pocket on the outside with the lining fabric. It's reversible too!

13  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / tangerine socks on: August 25, 2004 01:21:29 PM
some socks I just finished!

they are made out of merino wool and they are really thick and soft, but I'm probably going to wear them more like slippers (only while lounging around the house) as they're bulky and probably not so durable.

these are the first socks I've ever made. Now I just want to start another pair!
14  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / organize! on: August 25, 2004 01:09:24 PM
This is my birthday present for my dad.

It's on a plain grey tee shirt. I am a little nervous about it because I think he never really likes what I get him, so this year I decided to make him something, which I guess is a good idea but halfway through making it I started second-guessing myself. a couple years ago he bought a similar bumper sticker and I thought it was cute, and I wanted to make him a stenciled tee shirt, so this is what I came up with. but I also gave him a tee shirt for father's day this year. oops.

so what do you think? will he like it? His birthday is in 4 days and I haven't mailed it yet... oops again. I think it will be a little late, but I haven't decided if I'm finished yet. He does research with fish and I wanted to put a stencil on the back of the kind of fish he studies. I thought that would make it a little more personal.

the stencil was kind of a pain to make because I didn't want to cut out each individual fish, so I cut out a couple different-sized fish and stenciled each one on seperately.
15  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / brown and orange corduroy, yum! on: August 25, 2004 11:00:07 AM
here's a bag I just made. I got the fabric at a yard sale and it had been sitting around taking up space for a long time while I wondered what to do with it.

I am not sure if I like the strap as long as it is. Usually I like bags with longer straps, but I am thinking this bag might work better as an 'under-the-arm' kind of bag. Maybe I will make it shorter.

I'm also fantasizing about a big brown or orange button to close this thing, but I haven't found one that works yet.
16  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / hoodie! on: August 10, 2004 08:09:48 PM
I know it's not sweatshirt weather yet but I love hoodies and I had some sweatshirt material lying around so I made this! I just took a hoodie I had and kind of copied how it was made. I didn't have a zipper so I made it tie in front.

and with the hood up!

sorry about my blurry mirror.

here's the stencil. His arm looks a little weird because of the way the fabric is lying in the picture. can you tell what he is? Here's a hint: you have to look closely at the face mask/helmet part.

okay I'll tell you...
it's one of those deep sea divers with the crazy metal helmets/full body suits they used to wear... could you tell? I think it's more obvious in real life. I like how he looks, regardless.

I am still thinking of what else to do to this sweatshirt. not sure if I want to put something on the back as it's kind of plain. any suggestions?

I'm also thinking I might put an air tube coming out of the diver's helmet. The original picture had one but it looked like he was hanging himself so I took it off the stencil. Maybe I'll put some bubbles too.
17  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / diagonal-flowery-skirt on: July 03, 2004 04:02:15 PM
My first post! I hope the picture works.
I have been meaning to make this skirt forever, and I finally got around to it today! It was not very hard, I just cut out strips of fabric (wider at the bottom) and sewed them together, and slapped on a waistband. I didn't have zippers or buttons or anything to close it so I made a little lace-up on the side and used the ends of the waistband to tie it. I also sewed some of those little metal bell things on the ends of the tie.

umm the white thing is not part of the skirt, it is just some junk that was left on my floor.
