1  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / Spring Lantern on: October 31, 2007 12:50:51 AM
I decided to make a Spring themed jack-o-lantern since I am in New Zealand where it is not at all autumnal. The pumpkins at the store weren't very big and not particularly orange, so I used a butternut squash, it had the height I wanted for my design and it was vaguely orange.
To me daffodils are very symbolic of Spring, and I selected the Cancer Society daffodil logo for its stylised design.
I've never carved a pumpkin (or any other kind of vegetable) before so I kind of just made it up as I went along. I think I need more practice as I managed to make a few unwanted slices, but I'm pleased with the overall result. The whole thing only took about an hour. And I'm very pleased that I managed not to burn myself while lighting it, despite the narrow opening.

And I didn't want to waste the lovely insides so I made Pheather's butternut squash soup. Yum  Smiley
2  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Other Image Reproduction Techniques: Completed Projects / Dr. Who T-shirt on: October 05, 2007 07:49:11 PM
I've been making my way through season 3 of the new Doctor Who, and when I came to the episode 'Blink' I just had to make this t-shirt.

For those of you who haven't seen the episode, stone angel statues (which are actually aliens) stole the Doctor's Tardis and in a scene where the Doctor is talking to the main character via a dvd he says "the angels have the phonebox". Another character says that he loves that line and he has got it on a t-shirt.
It may sound a bit strange but it all makes sense in the episode, I highly recommend watching it.
Quite a few people were inspired by this scene and if you have a hunt around on the internet you can find people selling shirts with this phrase. But some of them are just boring text, and I'd rather make one myself to get it just the way I like it.

So here is my version:

I look the angels from a screen-cap of the show and altered the colours. The hardest bit was cutting out the individual letters for the beginning of the phrase and laying them down exactly straight. Because of the composition of the image it had to be ironed in three phases but I think it was worth the effort.

I'm just not sure if phonebox should be one word or two. I've come across both variations online.
3  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Beads: Completed Projects / My first bracelet and earrings - 3 strands and kinda patriotic on: March 12, 2007 07:14:05 PM
I bought a whole heap of beads yesterday, and since I am at hope sick today I thought I would try making a bracelet. I got the design idea from a dream I had, and then I adapted it to suit the materials.

Each strand is longer than the previous one so it hangs down your arm slightly. It was quite fiddly, and I had some trouble with the thread because it is so very thin, but I am pleased with the finished product.
I think I may try and make some matching earings next.

Here it is flat:

And an action shot:

(This is my first time using flickr, so fingers crossed that you guys can see the pictures fine)

ADDED: Here is a photo of the matching earrings that I have just finished making.
