1  California / California: North / Free stuff in Vacaville! on: November 26, 2009 10:05:00 PM
Hey ladies and gents - I live in Vacaville (on 80 between SF and Sac) and i'm moving. Sadly I need to get rid of some stuff, I don't have a car, so anybody interested would have to come to my house. Or meet me near my house if you'd rather.

I have:
+ Zippers (lots. Pounds of zippers literally. Lengths and colors are random, would be easier if someone just takes them all. About half a paper bag's worth)
+ Random quarter yards of various prints.
+ Vinyl (strips that have been cut to be 1.25" wide, lengths vary, fun colors like teal and plum)
+ Resin! I have some two part resin (the kind where you do NOT use catalyst) that can't move with me

So if you're interested, please reply to this thread or send me a message. I don't really want to dump this stuff off at a thrift store if someone local wants this stuff (some of it at least).
2  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Tips for Participating in Craft Fairs / Re: How much cash do you take for your register. on: May 29, 2007 06:26:27 PM
we (myself plus two friends) use a $200 change fund. my husband gets about $100 ones, $50 fives and $50 tens. he's our banker, so we turn to him for change, and we keep our profits on ourselves. we usually only need him during the morning when most of our customers only have crisp 20s from the atm.

I want to dry hump everything you make  Kiss
Cheesy haha, thanks missy!

GORGEOUS!!

Thanks for the idea of a french seam.. never heard of it before.
no problem! technique sharing is what these craft communities are all about (amongst other things)! i can't wait to see what you make with the french seams  - they're so easy and make a fantastic tailored finish to everything with exposed seams  Wink

what's a french seam?

usually its used on delicate fabrics that fray easily, but i like using it with all fabrics because i just like it. this is how it works:

lets say you are sewing up a basic tote bag.
instead of sewing up the sides with the right sides of the fabric together, sew the wrong sides together, THEN turn inside out and sew the sides again. this way the raw edges are tucked inside - nice and neat  Smiley

i've been in the worst anti-sewing funk since like.....january! so finally i made something, just a clutch, but i do like it!

clear vinyl is layered over the fabric, and the bottom & handle are both white vinyl. i made this with french seams, but i forgot to trim my zipper - so its a bit funky. otherwise, its 8.5" long and about 5" tall.

i took the pictures via webcam, and i didn't fix the colors. the lining is black and white, and the outer fabric is light blue with super dark brown.

what do you think?

ps - here's a gif i found that visually explains a french seam Smiley

thanks y'all!

love! where do you get your vinyl?

black vinyl: joann's (upholstery section)
pink vinyl: joann's (in the value flat folds)
sky blue vinyl: from an upholstery shop that is now out of business Sad

everywhere i go, i ALWAYS look for new pretty vinyls - its amazing what is out there!

hey there everyone! i've been sewing like a crazy woman lately and i just wanted to show off my most recent creations. they're pretty basic, but i love them!

organizers: these are for keeping up with those smaller pieces of paper that end up cluttering your purse, or shoved in your pockets. great for receipts, fortune cookie fortunes, ticket stubs - you know, paper that you don't want to lose!

eyeglass cases: self explanitory! not as protective as a hard case, but not sitting on your glasses is a good habit to get into anyway. these are best for fending away dust/dirt, the annoying stuff that you don't want on your glasses.

not too pleased with the inner vs. outer color combo - i was just antsy to use this pink vinyl  Lips sealed

see, its painted on both sides!

yay, eyeglass cases, or cozies if you prefer

a good medium size to fit most eye/sun glasses

i'm confused - are you asking for any tips for what to change, or are you just advertising your site?  Huh
