1  happy cloud and rainbow toy -- with TUTORIAL! in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by barbolot on: July 19, 2012 12:35:20 PM
I like this little plush cloud and rainbow because it can be a toy, a teether, or even a nursery decoration for boys or girls.  It's easy to make, and great for using up little scraps of fabric!  I made this one from 100% stash fabrics and scraps.

Let's get started!

You'll need:

+ pattern (free download -- HERE!)
+ felt, fleece or minky fabric for the cloud - 10" x 14"  (25.4 cm x 35.6 cm)
+ fabric scraps* for rainbow strips
+ fabric marker
+ embroidery thread
+ needle and thread
+ sewing machine
+ stick for turning
+ iron
+ stuffing (I prefer Premium Poly-fil, as it's non-allergenic and made from recycled materials)
      * You can also use ribbons cut to 8" (20.3 cm) lengths, or bias tape, or rick rack....
~ Seam allowance - 1/4" (.6 cm)

Print. . . .

~ Print and cut out pattern pieces.  Be sure to print pattern at "actual size," and allow for printing outside printer area.

you can get the pdf pattern HERE

Prepare. . . .

~ Trace and cut out pattern from fabrics.

~ On one of the cloud pieces, mark the circles for the stuffing opening, and mark where you want the face features to go.

Embroider. . . .

~ On the right side of one of the cloud pieces, embroider your cloud's face.  I used 6 stands of embroidery thread.

~ I backstitched the mouth and eye outlines, and filled the eyes with a satin stitch.  Set aside for now.

Make the rainbow. . . .

~ Fold one strip of the rainbow's fabric in half lengthwise.
~ Stitch along that long edge, using a 1/4" seam allowance. . .

. . . and at the end, turn and sewing along the short edge.  You'll now have a tube with one end open, and one end closed.

~ Clip the corners close to the stitching for nice, crisp corners.

~ Turn the tube right-side out, using your turning stick (I use a skinny paintbrush, since all of my turning sticks / chopsticks have somehow become little boy drumsticks or weapons.)
~ Press.
~ Repeat for the 5 remaining fabric strips.

Connect. . . .

~ Now take your embroidered cloud piece, and place the rainbow strips on the face, matching the raw edges of the strips with the bottom edge of the cloud.

~ Space them evenly if you like, leaving ~1" of cloud fabric on either side of the strips.

~ Pin the strips in place.

~ Sew the strips to the cloud, sewing very close to the edge. (~1/8")

~ Remove pins.
~ Now, fold the attached strips down, and pin them away from all other edges of the cloud.  (This is so the strips don't get caught in the seams when we sew the cloud pieces together.)

~ Place the remaining cloud, right side down, on the cloud-and-strip assemblage.

~ Pin in place.  Be sure to remember (and re-mark, if needed) the opening between the circles!

Sew. . . .

~ Sew the two cloud pieces together, starting at one circle (with a few reinforcing /back-and-forth stitches,) and stitching 1/4" from the edge.
~ Go slowly around the curves and pivot carefully at the indentations and corners.
~ Stop at the other circle, with a few reinforcing stitches here, too.

~ Stitch once more along the flat edge of the cloud, to reinforce the strips.

Clip. . . .

~ Clip notches inside the seam allowance along the curves, being careful not to clip the seam threads.  Cut notches into the deeper cloud indentations, and clip the corners along the cloud's bottom edge.  This will make all the difference in your cloud being bunchy and wrinkled, or smooth and properly puffy!

Turn. . . .

~ Reach inside -- carefully! -- and remove the pins from the strips.

~ Now, turn the cloud right-side out.  Take your time, as it's a little bit of a squeeze to get it all out of the opening.
~ Run your turning stick gently along the inside of the cloud along the seams, pushing out stubborn corners and edges.

Stuff. . . .

~ Stuff your cloud with stuffing.  I used a lot of poly-fil to make it firm, but you can have it as squishy or plump as you like.  I meant to add a little core of lavender, but forgot... and that would have been a nice addition, I think!

Close. . . .

~ Pin the opening closed, making sure to tuck all the stuffing nicely inside.

~ Hand-stitch the opening closed with your needle and thread.  I use a ladder stitch, as it's pretty much invisible, but any stitch you're comfortable with will do.

Knot. . . or not. . . .

~ You can knot the ends of the strips of you'd like.  I think a teething baby would probably prefer it this way.  Donovan didn't care one way or the other.  He just wanted to roll around and chew on it. . . .

SUCCESS!

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial, and please - if you have any questions at all, just ask!  I'd love to hear what you think!  Smiley

And the fine print stuff -- Feel free to make these for personal or charitable use.  Please do not sell my pattern, or post it without permission.  As with all toys, supervise your child during play, and look for signs of wear and tear.

I'm SO glad you liked it, Anya Kase!  I snapped a couple of photos before I shipped:  Wink

And I thought I'd share our hoop wall so far!  It's in our classroom (we homeschool) and it really brightens the room.  Smiley  (My newest hoop from Anya Kase is currently being showcased on the living room mantel, so it's not shown on this wall.)

My teens have really taken to embroidery lately, and are very prolific stitchers!  Most of these were created by them.  (The only one I've made is the sacred heart, down in the lefthand corner.)  Wink

We have a few more, waiting to be hooped and hung, and I can't wait to fill up this wall completely!
Thanks again for swapping with me, Anya Kase!  Smiley

I received THE MOST AWESOME HOOP in the UNIVERSE from Anya Kase!  Seriously, I opened the package, my jaw dropped (for real) and I couldn't even breathe for a full minute.  Trying to take it all in.  It's so perfect.....

The color, the theme, the stitching, the texture.... I love. it. all.

SO FREAKIN GORGEOUS!!!!!  The stiches are amazing.  Some are unbelievably tiny... I'm talking maybe 2mm in length.  Crazy good.

Thank you so much, anya, for this amazing hoop!  I appreciate all the time, thought, and talent you put into my piece.  THANK YOU!!  Smiley
I'm still working on your piece, and I hope it's half as good as the one you sent me.... talk about swap anxiety!  Wink

PS.... if you have better photos, please post them.  My camera seriously sucks at trying to capture how awesome this hoop is!

5  Re: New Baby and Pregnant Mama Swap 2 (Gallery) in The Swap Gallery by barbolot on: June 16, 2011 06:13:34 PM
I received a MOST lovely package from knittychick a couple of weeks ago, and I am terribly sorry to be JUST NOW uploading.  Please don't take it as a statement on how much I love and appreciate this package!  (Going on week 2 of sick kiddos.... YUCK.)  Every single item has so much thought, skill, consideration and time put into each one.... I truly, truly appreciate everything!  Now, onto my AWESOME package!!!

I'm planning to nurse our next little baby, and knittychick made me a fabulous nursing cover!  Using my favorite themes (sea critters, and NARWHALS!), plus my favorite colors (aqua, orange and green!), she made this reversible cover with pockets for necessities, or whatever!  It also has an adjustable neck strap, and boning in the neckline so I can keep an eye on baby.  I LOVE it!

Now this next item... I can't even begin to describe how awesome it is.  And I couldn't photograph it well, but I tried.  It's a swaddler that can also be used in the carseat/carrier! (I hope you can see the "legs" at the bottom!)  Genius!!  Also with the adorable sea creatures, favorite colors, and oh-so-soft minky lining!

A set of precious burp cloths, hand painted with our favorite characters!  (Almost too cute to use as burp cloths!)  Wink

And last but not least, she included a nursing-station caddy!  I SOOOO needed one of these!  It's the perfect size for burp cloths, diaper, wipes, water & snack for me, phone, etc.

My sweet partner also included the left-over fabric, so I can craft more for little one... yay for fabric!  Thank you SO much, knittychick, for being such an awesomely thoughtful partner.  I really appreciate YOU, and I can't wait to use these goodies for our new baby!   Kiss

WOW!  Some really adorable additions to the gallery!  You gals are so talented!

I've sent one set of shirts to Lo{ve}'s little nephew, so she won't get to see the shirts on him just yet.  She said I can go ahead and post pics of what I've sent, so here they are!

A vintage radio applique, with a little stencil action thrown in:

Some appliqued frogs:

My first try at screenprinting, with some embroidered smiles!  Not perfect, and maybe a little plain, but I still think they're cute.  Smiley

A reverse applique of Yoda (and my second attempt at screenprinting!)

And my favorite, with more applique and embroidery:

Lo{ve}, I hope your sister likes the shirts!  Smiley  I sure enjoyed making them for her.
And Crazy4bags, your package ships tomorrow!  Smiley

That unique little baby or toddler in your life deserves to be adorned in a Craftster-embellished onesie every day!  But since we can't possibly craft a year's-worth of onesies for our special tots, why not 5 days' worth??

If you need some inspiration (or just want a heavy dose of cuteness), please visit our previous galleries:
Round 1
Round 2
Round 3
Round 4
Round 5

SWAP DETAILS:

**You will be embellishing FIVE onesies (or t-shirts for larger tots) for your partner, according to their tastes.   The onesies/tees can be store-bought or handmade.  (We chose the amount of 5 onesies, as that is the amount you can usually purchase in one package.)
**You may choose to swap 10 shirts, and will receive 10 shirts in return.  Please note that this is really quite a bit of work, so please commit to this only if you will have the time and resources to do this.
**If you choose 10 shirts, you may choose to have 1 partner, and swap 10 shirts with that partner, or you may choose 2 partners, and swap 5 shirts with each partner.
**Please also bear in mind that if we have an odd number of swappers, we may have to arrange a round robin-style partnering.  Smiley

**You can use almost anything to embellish them: stencils, embroidery, sewing, appliques, dyeing, etc.   NO IRON-ONS.
**You can join even if you don't have a tot of your own to craft for..... friends and relatives love crafty onesies, too. (If you meet all the above swap requirements.)
**The swap is limited to babies/tots sizes Newborns to 4T.
**Please -- let's keep our crafting limited to the onesies/tees ONLY.  We want this swap to be low-stress for everyone, as most of us have little ones to tend to, as well!

**DCN's will be required.  If you are an international swapper, you MUST keep your shipping receipts.
**I check PMs and update feedbacks in the evenings, so please bear with me.
**You will be given feedback once your partner receives, and photos of your package are posted in the gallery, preferably by your partner.
