1  Mario Shoulder Bag, now with 10% more magic mushrooms in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by madfishmonger on: October 13, 2008 04:06:34 PM
It's-a me! Mario!

I made this bag to donate to a fundraiser at the Comic Convention this weekend in Winnipeg.

The whole bag

Flying fish on the flap.

Nintendo controller on the strap.

Lift up the flap and...

It's-a me! Mario!

I got the Mario image from a bedsheet, which means there'll be more Mario (and Zelda) bags to come. I was very happy to hear that the bag sold and made a little money for the Heroes Initiative charity.

2  Awesome backpack in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by madfishmonger on: May 29, 2008 09:19:20 PM
I was so excited about finishing this I just had to post it. Sorry for the crappy flash pictures.

I really needed a bigger bag, so I made myself a backpack.

The front (under the fringed flap)

With a zipper pocket.

The lining. There's an open-top pocket on the front, and another zipper pocket on the back. I love this fabric, even though it's all Little House on the Prairie

The back of the backpack has a big open-top pocket too.

It's a shoulder bag.

But take the strap (made from an old necktie) out of the D-rings...

Run it through the loop in the back...

And back through the D-rings...

And it's a backpack!

I can't wait to wear it. I tried taking pictures in the mirror of myself wearing it, needless to say I have only lovely photos of the top of my dresser and my ample hips (do I really look like that from the back? Blech!) I'm not too happy with how the bias tape around the top looks, I probably won't do that again. Do you think I should do something to the side edges of the flap?
I'll be making another couple of these, so I could post a tutorial if anyone's interested.

3  What would you do? in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions by madfishmonger on: April 17, 2008 10:20:30 PM
So I finally figure out how to make a bag with a gusset and a zipper, it turns out great, I open it and....the zipper breaks. I've pulled the zipper out, but I'd have to pull the whole bag apart to get another zipper in it. I was thinking of just hemming the top and putting on another closure, but I wondered if any  of you lovely crafters had clever ideas.

The whole bag, it's a sort of felted wool, I think, beautiful fabric.

The fantastic tie I used as the strap. The other side has two D-rings to make it adjustable (and hard to take that side apart).

The top, zipper removed (I didn't take any pics with the zipper in).

Close up, the zipper sat in the middle.

5  Buttons and Bows Purse (okay, ONE bow) in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by madfishmonger on: April 07, 2008 12:06:10 PM

The strap is recycled from a belt. The bag is upholstery fabric, with a cotton lining.

It has a zipper closure.

Spotty lining.

And...

Buttons! I heart vintage buttons. The other side is blank. Crits and comments welcome, thanks.

7  Salad Bag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by madfishmonger on: March 23, 2008 01:29:07 PM
I found the lining for this bag and it inspired me. I used my sister's machine to do the applique edges, I've never done it before and her machine is hard to work with, but this is the result!

It has a zipper closure and an adjustable strap. I hate sewing straps!

Tomato farmer! So weird.

Also I made this bag, I'm not sure if it needs a lining. Maybe some bias tape over the seams? What do you think?

I love vintage buttons!

8  Plaid Bag and Wheat Pouch in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by madfishmonger on: March 13, 2008 03:53:56 PM
So I was asked to make a couple of things for a fundraiser that's sending 15 students to Thailand. I made two girl bags and two boy bags, here are the boy things I made.

This is a reversible plaid, I'm having a lot of fun with it.

It's got a zipper closure and a pocket inside.

I also made a little zippered pouch.

Wheat, hand-drawn with fabric markers. I love those!

Plain brown lining.

9  Re: Hemp Crazy - I can't stop! in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by madfishmonger on: March 11, 2008 09:49:40 PM
More!
Today was a lovely day, I sat out in the sunshine and make this one. Turns out some of the sunlight-reactive beads I thought were dude were actually yellow, and they take a little more sunlight to change colour.

Indoors

On me.

In the sun.

Here's some of the other ones in the sun.

I bought more hemp today. I'm really getting mental with this.

10  Acorn Bag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by madfishmonger on: March 07, 2008 02:30:01 PM
The light's not good for warm colours today.

Here's a close-up of the acorn, I drew it on with a fabric marker.

It has an adjustable strap made of a lovely necktie, and a zipper closure. There are two pockets inside. What do you think?
