hey someone read my blog (on a different forum) and asked me to make her some cushion covers for her new house - but a) I have no idea what to charge and b) I have never made cushion covers! How hard can it be? Huh

Hey: sometime last year, "Quilts and more", a specialty magazine from Better Homes and Gardens put an article featuring this very bag. It's also a pattern available from Vogue Patterns.
I recognize it because I tore out the pattern and the instructions from "Quilts and More" myself. I've been ... uh ... meaning to make this one for my sister in law. (the road to where is paved with good intentions?)  I'll be getting onto it right quick now.

do it its super easy! - i got the pattern out of an Australian edition of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.

There is one in Amy Karols book Bend The Rules Sewing. Its the Simple Tote. Good luck!

yeh I've made the Amy Karol one but I made it with equal handles - i don't think that shape of tote works with uneven handles IMO. The one in this thread was a tear-drop shaped one as you can see in the pictures.

estaki - your totes are fabulous!  I love the colors and the fabrics. I wish I had seen this thread a while back.  I've made about four of these bags.  Did you use the batting as the directions said??  The one I used batting on (it was with a silky brocade not cotton) came out a little wonky.  The other three were made out of home dec fabrics and worked better for me...nothing inside since the fabric was stiff enough.

Your's are definitely gorgeous though Cheesy

Thanks violet_thistle
I did use the batting as directed - its the first time I have ever used batting so it was a learning experience (plus I have quite rough skin on my hands and I kept 'catching' on the batting!  Roll Eyes). The fabrics are fairly thin quilting cottons so the batting gives them a wonderful sponginess which I love. I think if I were to use a thicker cotton like some of my echino fabrics I might forego the batting altogether.

ok getting back on topic here are my versions of the bag from the BHG magazine....oh and I found my original copy in a place I'd never think to look...
First one made in Denyse Schmidt Flea Market Fancy Fabrics and in the size the pattern suggested. Second one made from stuff I had lying around and made in a smaller size to what was suggested. Both were xmas presents for friends who loved them...

This is a lovely tutorial, I love how the bag can be jazzed (yes, I'm 17 and I use the expression "jazz it up") up for anyone with snazzy (I also use snazzy a lot) fabric.  Great job!  Cheesy

Sorry off topic....
miss dictionary I love your use of terminology - I do it too - my favourite is to use 'frock' instead of 'dress' - my friends always look at me funny!  Cheesy Wink
