1  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Re: Just got a free Household Sewing Machine from the 1870's! on: June 29, 2010 03:39:31 PM
sewing machine oil is probably the best lubricant you can use. as for needles, try removing the needle that's on the machine now, and see if its just a standard needle, or what.

You could probably email the person with the machine in the link you posted and ask about it. Good luck, it is a very cool machine.
2  CROCHET / Crochetalongs / Re: 2009 12" Squares- December! on: February 15, 2010 11:06:06 PM
So I felt crafty today (after a long break of no crafting) and picked this back up. I completed the august square, and most of the september square tonight.

I think I'm going to do a duplicate of one of the squares, and make a pillow-ghan if I have enough yarn leftover. then i have to find someone to give it to, as it absolutely does not match my decor!

My goal is to have it finished by the end of March. three months late isn't too bad, right?

you will do 4 sc's, followed by 1 dec, then repeat the whole thing all the way around.

here are my squares so far-

january

february

march

april

may

june

july

and i tried getting a picture of them all together, but my cat decided to help (actually, he was helping in the first two pics, too, as you can tell)

the colors aren't bad, per se, but back in january, i was way more into blues than I am now... and as i'm seeing the squares together, i'm deciding that this "sampler" look just isn't for me... I'd much rather do an afghan using all the same square.

i showed these to my mom, and she wants me to do one for her in shades of green, using the april and may squares. too bad I hate working in pieces!

i am so bored with the colors i picked way back in january. i laid out the blocks and showed them to my sister. she suggested it would be a good christmas present for my grandma. so that's where it will be going. i was hoping it would be something i'd want to keep, but as i start to see it all coming together, its just not my style.

that second one is absolutely wonderful! I'd love to see a pattern! This would be one T. blondi that I wouldn't have to worry about making me itch!

I gave up in the middle of march's square, and have just picked this back up today. now i'm halfway through the july square, after finishing march, april, may, and june.

squares are definitely not my thing, but i will finish this project by the end of the year!

Red Heart does get softer when washed. i've done a few afghans with it, and hate working with it because it feels so crunchy, but after washing, it gets a lot nicer. I have to wash everything before giving it away, anyways, coming from a multi-pet household, lol.

I'm taking my time with this month's square. its not a pattern that I'm enjoying much, but that could be more to do with my finger joints being achy lately than the actual pattern...

still have to figure out who I'm giving this to at the end of the year... I'm liking the colors a lot less now than I did when I bought the yarn, and it was never intended for me to keep. maybe I'll let my mom gift it to one of her friends...

I ended up with an extra ch 3 sp somewhere before it turned into a square, but was able to work it out evenly so it still came out square... Required more attention to detail than I'm used to, because of the odd shape and all... Its pretty, though, and I guess that's all that matters...
