Portland area sewists (seamstresses and seamsters? not sewers, that sounds better than it looks written, anyway, people who sew) should all be aware of the meetup.com group, The PDX Sewing Circle, http://www.meetup.com/PDXSewingCircle/
. I have had a great time at every meetup I've gone to with these fine folks. The organizer, Davina, is fantastic, as is everyone I've met through the group. The locations are fun, and the meetups are nice and regular. Locations vary from east to west sides of the river, and sometimes there's a theme, or just free crafting. of course, you're always welcome to bring whatever project you're stitching up and share in the conversation.
The next meetup http://www.meetup.com/PDXSewingCircle/calendar/11935114/
will be at PDX Seamsters, a fantastic sewing studio that you should be sure to check out. A nice big studio space with plenty of tables, outlets, and irons all available to use. Sewing machines are available to borrow for $5 an hour or bring your own (there are a couple of sergers there, too!). That'll be next saturday, at 2:00pm. There is a $10 (sliding scale) donation suggested, since there are costs for renting the space, but it's a great deal, and so worth it.
I'll be there for sure, so anyone interested in sewing (of any skill level!) should be sure to come, too. There's sure to be lively conversations, advice and opinions if you want it, and new project ideas. I'd love to see more craftster people there! Check out their page on meetup, have look at the calendar and what people are saying. I'm just a new member to the group, but feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
