Sometimes the material is too thick to use the turners.  When this happens with me - I cut a strip 4x the width I want the strap.  Fold it in half length wise and press.  Take the raw edges and fold them inside so they touch the fold. Press.  (I use straight pins to stab them into my ironing board.)  Now stitch about 1/8th of an inch away from the edge with two folds, stitch the other fold. This makes a nice strudy strap, if he material is thin then I use a fusible interfacing.
