1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Superglued CD Mosaic on a Wine Bottle on: May 29, 2011 12:46:15 AM
This is my (belated) mother's day gift. I found the purple silk flower (with plastic fern attached) in an alley, and was inspired to be crafty with it! I found the scratched up old CD on a sidewalk, and the wine bottle was in our recycling Smiley I settled on an "E" because my mother has that monogrammed all over the house, but I bet you could use the CD pieces to do pretty abstract designs.

The bottle already had the blue at the top, and I decided to leave that on because it was pretty Smiley My roommate cut off the blue packaging covering the cork very cleanly, so it didn't look messy.

Before I glued on the larger pieces, I roughed up the glasses with a nail file. I don't know if this step was necessary, I just wanted the mosaic to be extra secure, since it's a gift. The smaller pieces seemed to stay on pretty well on their own.

When I was finished, the bottle had smudges of superglue on it, which I cleaned off using q-tips with acetone (and scraped it with my fingernails.) Unfortunately, the superglue made some of the CD pieces cloudy, and the acetone didn't remove the smudges. I think if I did this again, I would use tweezers to place the pieces on the bottle, since my fingers were covered in super glue and left the grody superglue residue on supposed-to-be-shiny pieces.

I'm thinking about putting something in it, like marbles or sand. What do you guys think?
2  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / Where To Find Things To Recycle / Alleys! on: May 16, 2011 09:38:25 PM
I live in Richmond, VA and people throw out the BEST stuff in our alleys. I found a purple silk flower, old CDs to make mosaics out of, mirrors with wood edging... Smiley What have you guys found in an alley before?
3  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / finishing a line of stitches when sewing by hand? on: May 16, 2011 06:55:13 PM
I've recently begun some very minor hand sewing (sewing a patch onto a shirt, sewing a bead to a dress, etc) I was taught how to sew when I was young, but since coming to college forgot some of the basics, like how to finish off a line of stitches! I try to knot it, but I get OCD about it and try to make a million extraneous, time-consuming knots on top of knots, loops and a bunch of mess. What is the most efficient way to do this?
