1  Re: Handspun Yarn & Fiber Swap Round 2 GALLERY in The Swap Gallery by theboythatspins on: July 09, 2009 06:48:43 PM
Sooo I received my package the other day from RhymeswOrange! I was headed out the door to our local farmers market to do some spinning with some friends and low and behold there my package was. I was really excited and opened the top but stopped myself so my friends and I could see what was inside together Cheesy I was amazed at how much she spoiled me! A pretty card, TONS of hand-dyed roving in NEON colors just to my liking! And a cute hand-sewn reversible project bag made out of an asian print that MATCHES my kimono I made for my senior project!!! I am so stoked to receive such great gifts and now I feel like I don't match what I sent!!! ;_;

On to the photos! I realized I forgot to take a picture of the beautifully spun ball of yarn she spun for me but trust me, it's amazing!

These are all millends, I love how BRIGHT in real life they are!!!

Thank you sooooo much RhymeswOrange <3!

I haven't touched my spinning wheel in about 6 months, so I am now just getting back into the groove. All I have is merino...TONS of merino and honestly... I don't really enjoy spinning it...but, I am really trying to do a nice two ply. I want my plied yarns to look like Cloudlover's and MissHawklet's... that would be amazing Cheesy Love all the stuff up so far! On the bobbin: Merino.. calling it Cheshire Cat.

Holy crap the colors this week are amazing! Great Job everyone Cheesy

My few from summer vacation:

First is masham and a llama/cormo blend; 2ply; about 88 yards

Next is MEGA BLUE, random wool and mohair blend that I spun extreamly bulky...the sad thing is I wanted to break out my spindle since I've used my wheel for the past .... 4 months since I've gotten it and this is how I did...lmao! I think I managed 15-25 yards..

This was roving that I dyed with kool-aid and then spun into a light-heavy worsted; single; I think I have 140 or 150..not sure; llama/wool/silk blend

This I also dyed with kool-aid and is the same blend as the one above, just different colors. I tried to spin it like Holly[misshawklet] spins her singles...I failed Ha! I told her that once you train youself to spin thin..it's hard to go back; single; 50-52 yards

One of my favorites and a dream to spin; I call it chocolate covered strawberries Cheesy ; single; 120+ yards; pink-merino and brown/black- llama/cormo blend

MY FAVORTIE!!! This was spun from roving from a California Red sheep, I got it from the only person in Virginia[where I live] who has this breed in the whole state. It feels so coarse at first but when you spin it up it is a nice solid but still fluffy and soft yarn. It is an oatmeal color with small hairs that look like guard hairs that are shades of fire red all the way to raspberry...this picture does no justice it's amazing Cheesy ; 2ply; pretty even light to medium worsted; 100+ yards; from 2oz. of roving

Thanks for letting me participate, can't wait till next week Cheesy

so far...

This finally dried yesterday from the setting of the twist it's 110 yards of washed Kidmohair and Border Liecester lamb locks along with translucent and silver angelina in which I carded on my ashford mini hand cards. It was my first time spinning/blending with angelina and also blending different locks together.

And this is what I'm working on right now. It's my first single of the lb. of Masham I saved, I was planning on plying it [ I was smart, this time so I would kinda have equal bobbins and fiber left over, I split all the roving up into equal amount >_<] but I think I might be able to spin enough for some socks if I leave them as singles, because the weight i'm spinning the singles looks and is about the size of finished, store bought sock yarn. What do you think? Oh and sorry for the crappy flash shot for this one, we just had a storm and it's still a little cloudy...I actually wanted to take the pics outside but its so humid that my lens fogged up!

~*~*~*~*~*GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!!!*~*~*~*~*~

6  Fun new experiences<3 Edit: the worst thing that could happen to free fiber :( in Spinning: Completed Projects by theboythatspins on: July 07, 2007 10:53:09 AM
Hi,
Just got this yesterday from my friend Nan for spinning her some yarn [she's a felter and didn't need all the left over roving and such and wanted to help another fiber artist out...I see nothing wrong with that lol]

This is the yarn I spun for her, she wanted a worsted weight to knit into a hat for her husband out of it because the roving consisted of Baby Llama and cormo, it was so soft, and the llama who's fiber was in it, is her husbands favorite so I thought that was sweet Cheesy

EDIT:

It was an accident so I can't be all that mad...but dad decided to do some sring cleaning for some reason...IN THE SUMMER....and threw away my big bag of fiber that I got...it was in a trash bag and I thought I marked it with a sign...oh well, I managed to keep my Masham out on the table...so I still have a lb. of that left....this really stinks, especially since my fiber store is 2 hours away and is closed all this month. *hits self in head now*

This is what I got for it:
1 Lb. of random wool, 8 oz. of Llama/Shetland mix, and 4 oz. of kid mohair and border liecester lamb locks

1 lb. of Masham wool top, imported from England [I had never heard of this before and thought it would be a really rough and course yarn but it turned out other wise], and samples for me to try of Ramie, Angelina, and Jute [I'm going to her house this wedsday and we are having a felting/spinning day and she said I can go through her stash and take what I want!]

and finally, the colorful stuff is 100% merino top, my first time and I just have to say I love it. here it is spun up.

I have started to blend and spin with my hand cards and louet s10 the border lie.+angelina+kid mohair and it's comming along nice and now I have started also to spin some of the Masham. It's a course wool but doesnt feel course up against the skin, it's very warm and will make a nice, heavy-duty sweater or hat or sock yarn Cheesy I don't know weather to ply it or just leave it as a single and knit some socks with it. I have a pound and am spinning my first single of it at almost the finished weight and thickness of a finished, store bought sock yarn. What do you think? Thanks, hope I didn't bore you lol  Grin Lips sealed

p.s.- I will post pictures of the finished yarn and batts I have made tomorrow or monday, my camera needs new batteries and I have to go buy some since I cant find my battery charger!

8  First ever wheel spun! in Spinning: Completed Projects by theboythatspins on: June 05, 2007 06:16:30 PM
Hi,

Finally I got a wheel for an early birthday present. It's a Louet S10 and I love it Cheesy Here are my first yarns in order of which I spun them...all spun in a week too...these are just the ones I'm proud of, I have spun many funky/ugly color combs which I wont share lol!

Random wool 2 ply first ever spun on my wheel

Skies, random blue and white roving, plied with thread, so this would be a boucle? I love it I added little coils here and there where I got too distracted and spun really thinly

Colorful, brightly and beatiful dyed cotswood locks, that I carded for the first time, some on my hand cards and some on my friends Drum carder, also plied with thread

My favorite... Paper or Plastic? Recycled wool and recycled grocery bags all spun together here and there and then plied with thread ( I kinda like that now Cheesy Lol!)

And all together they can be used as a floatation device incase of emergency lol! I think it looks like a cool colorful coutour neck warmer Cheesy!

Thanks for looking comments and tips welcome Cheesy This wouldn't have been possible if all of your beautiful yarns and fibers weren't here to inspire me ! And please excuse the bad lighting and pictures lol, it's getting dark around here and my computer was actually wanting to upload tonight so I thought I would jump on the chance loL!

9  First cabled project and some hats :) in Knitting: Completed Projects by theboythatspins on: June 05, 2007 06:06:35 PM
Hi,

My first  cabled project, it's the owl cable hat Smiley I like it alot Cheesy

Long shot (i'm not emo! I actually dress in the Japanese street fashion known as FRUiTs Cheesy)

Cable detail

This is my first earflap hat, it's knit in the round (my first in the round project) and I have a new found love for earflap hats, ever since seeing the beautiful knit ones in south america so pretty

Finally my first free-form knit hat, just knit as I went and added the i-cords that hang from the top and the little knit boings on the side. Made from SWS in Natural- Plum and Denim and Rose

Thanks for looking, please excuse the bad lighting and picture taking, my face is scary and the light right now sucks lol!

EVERYTHING LOOKS AMAZING~!!!

Here is some stuff I have done.

I got my Mother Marion Spinning Wheel and here it is Cheesy. It looks small but it is HUGE!!! and you kick spin it ! It's so fun and faster than a regular drop spindle, and it also allows you to do coils and all sorts of fun stuff that could be difficult on a spindle

This is a crappy picture but it's to show the colors, I spun this single up and it is 100% Superwash and it is amazing to spin I love it! I spun it and it was at 122 yards, but I have about half the fiber left. I am in the process of plying it with some teal/turqouise sewing thread and I love the way it looks...but I now realize the single was supposed to be not set and spun in a Z twist...ohwell but I like it Cheesy

I haven't come up with a name for this but it is really crappy practice romney wool that I got, I love the colors, I am going to ply it back on itself. Yardage now is about 61 yards, and I have more fiber that I will probly spin since when you ply it back on itself it takes 1/2 the yardage or more out.

Glad to share this with everyone Cheesy
