Walmart (as well as a bunch of dollar stores like Fred's, Roses, Dollar General, etc,, I'm pretty sure) all carry blank canvas shoes-- at WallMart, they're usually in boxes next to the house shoes/slippers...

hmm, a soldering iron sounds like it might work, I think the only difference is the tip (woodburners have more of a blade-ish tip I think?)  You could probably do it without even burning em if you etched it with some sharp object, and then painted black where you etched it (the paint shoudn't scratch off if it's down in grooves)
