ergh i'm so very nearly finished with this and then my sewing machine self destructed!  stripped gears, the works.  mostly annoyed cos i want my wallet!

anyway, advanced feedback: this is a brilliant tutorial.  i tried making myself a similar thing a week ago and well... it turned out but not prettily.  so when i saw this today i jumped on it straight away and got sewing.  nice easy instructions to follow, with enough flexibility to change things around a bit.  i'll post pics once i find someone else with a sewing machine who i can bribe for half an hour on it.

with any luck there'll be a sewing machine sale on soon... i don't know how long i can go without one!

For waterproofing, how about just spraying it with a few coats of silicone spray that you would use for waterproofing tents or shoes? I've sprayed a variety of bags I've purchased with silicone, and it's worked wonderfully. It's also relatively inexpensive because 1 can will last you a while.

hmm that's an idea I hadn't considered.  I wonder how it'd affect the felt on the front... shall do some research.

I hope your bag turns out well Smiley

That is so adorable!! Cutest bag I've ever seen. Mind if I duplicate? I keep picturing a forest green bag.

doesn't bother me at all, I stole the idea from mehran to begin with (hope that's ok with him/her actually  Undecided )

s'pose the general proviso should be not to profit off his/her bag.  imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all.

also an update on the bag: had my first day back at uni today and the bag held up VERY well.  perfect size vs slouch and I got a lot of positive comments as well as a few squees Smiley

a change for next time also will be waterproofing somehow.  it's winter here right now so my stuff got saturated while i ran for the bus this morning in the rain.  I don't know whether I'd have to butcher a raincoat to include behind the lining or what but I'll look into it before I start another one

Dont set that down at Uni or else I will steal it. [Ill leave the stuff inside for you.]
you know, I'm actually scared of someone stealing my notes.  I think I'd care more about that than my phone/wallet etc lol

I got all my fabric at Spotlight in Australia

So a new semester of uni is rolling around and I've done nothing with my holiday.  I have 5 days left to go so I figure I may as well head on down to my local fabric store, bust out the sewing machine, and attempt to make one of the numerous beauties I've bookmarked over the past 4 months (because I have very little creativity of my own and rely upon replicating things to fill my wardrobe/crafting desires).

So thanks to mehran over at etsy for inspiration and heart of mary from the blogger scene for the tute, I've turned out my new laptop/school book/spare change of clothes bag.

hmm looks a little floppy in this pic, which is odd since it's got half a dozen layers of medium-heavy interfacing in there...

you can't see the strap at all but one end's connected directly to the bag while the other is on a clippy thingy.  the strap has super heavy weight interfacing in it and is adjustable.  I like my straps mega long and this one is longer than even I require, would give you numbers but I don't have them Tongue

The top zipper came out perfectly.  I actually lined the inside of it cos I didn't like the unfinished feel of the raw zipper edge.  I didn't include the inside zip pocket that was in the tutorial cos I never end up using them regardless (just lose my stuff in them somehow) but there's 3 open pockets on the outside of the bag: 2 under the flap and 1 big one on the back.

the AMAZING fabric I found to line the bag which cinched the deal on me making it owl themed.  If I ever work up the energy to make another one I'll do it panda style or something.

The bag ended up being close to 40cm x 25cm x 8cm and it holds exactly what I need for uni without extra space that tempts me to overfill it and break my back/shoulder.

i love it, it's so oldtimey

you look gorgeous in it, don't listen to anything esmerelda has to say.  imo the reason it looks good on her is that she has red skin.  it would go fantastically with accessories of that colour. (that or get horribly sunburned)  Roll Eyes

I found it at Spotlight in Australia.  I'm sorry I can't help if you're elsewhere Tongue

Haha sadly my laptop is still naked. I've been meaning to do something similar for myself but I'm just too picky about fabric!
