21  Texas / Texas: Coastal / One on one sewing lessons, Houston on: June 05, 2007 01:42:30 PM
Hi

I can sew pretty good, but there are a few things i cant get my head around (zippers etc).

Im looking for some one on one time with someone who can teach me how to do some of the more demanding sewing techniques. Id be happy to pay for this time.

I have tried to find lessons in the local area but been unsuccessful.

Let me know if you can help

24  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / I really need help...handles on a knitted bag on: February 14, 2007 08:00:46 AM
My Mil (mother in law) whom I live with is knitting me fantastic cable knit squares which Im turning in to bags for friends.

Said friends are asking for bamboo handles...I have made one bag with handles, but they are really bothering me, I dont think they look that great, and Im getting really stressed about them.

Although these are for friends, Im setting up a bag making business, (fabric mainly, not knits) and Im worried that as examples of my work, they will reflect poorly...

Anyway, how have people added handles to knit bags?

The on in the picture, I sewed on to the top of the bag....One im working on, i folded the top part of the knit over the handle, and sewed under the handle...soo frustrated right now with it!

26  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / I'm building up a list of patterns to try...rec your fav pattern here! on: January 26, 2007 05:49:40 PM
Hello

As it says above, really.. Im training myself in dressmaking but my confidence is a bit low atm.

Im looking for people to post their fav patterns (and pictures, hopefully) so I can make a list of good patterns to try.

My skills are a bit all over the place..Im beyond beginner level with some things, but a few techniques such as zips/darts are on my list to master.

I especially like skirts and dresses, but all patterns are welcome. I currently only sew bags so need to expand..

I also need to build up my confidence, as well as make some new friends (just moved to the USA from UK and Im a bit lonely (*plays violins*) so lets get chatting!

27  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / What could I use instead of Duck Cotton? on: January 22, 2007 02:57:43 PM
Hello

Im making a bag which requires me to use "1 1/4 yards of 60" wide 10 oz. cotton canvas or Natural Duck Cloth for the interfacing."

Im struggling to locate this, and when I do its not the right width. Is there anything thats reasonably easy to get hold of that I can substitute for this?

Thanks

28  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / So I have this torso.... on: January 22, 2007 12:48:48 PM

I managed to end up with a torso that was going cheap when a store was closing down.

I want to make her a bit prettier, and more vintage looking and I think Im going to cover her with some kind of paper, but Im new at sticking paper to something.

She currently looks like this

and I think id like her to look something like this

I make Vintage clothing and bags and am planning on using this in my photos of these items...

So, my question...what kind of paper would you use and how best to do it?

Im thinking scrapbooking papers are quite good, and that tearing them up, and applying with wallpaper paste then varnishing over the top might work...

Id love to hear opinions/see pictures of this kind of thing to give me inspiration.
