11  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / The vomit-inducingly cute Strawberry Shortcake, Cherries and Flowers quilt... on: September 06, 2011 12:31:54 PM
...AKA the grown up blankie AKA my first quilt.

So I have finished my 20+ years of education (seriously, I counted.) and I have no job. So what's a girl to do in between job hunting? Take up quilting of course!

So here it is, the pinkest, cutest, most diabetic-coma inducing quilt ever to be made and not given to a small child. I'm not even going to pretend this is for my niece because even at 7 years old, even she's too cool for this quilt.

It's nothing fancy, but given the fact that the most complicated thingI had made before his was a blue jean apron, I am rather proud of myself.

The quilt is made of 10"x10" squares of 4 prints from my modest stash that I thought matched well enough arranged in a 6x6 pattern. It ended up being about 56"x56" after being assembled. My favourite squares are retro Strawberry Shortcake ones, though the cherries are very, very cute too.

Here you can see a glimpse of the backing (cotton flannel. Soooo soft!) and the binding; I cheated a little and used satin blanket binding resulting in a quilt that resembles a giant blankie but who cares, its soooooo snuggly! I tied it using cotton embroidery thread in the centre of each square and in each patchwork corner, so its nice and lofty. It's the perfect nap blanket for grown ups.

Sucky phone shot of the top just to give you an idea of the size.

Since I am a sucker for progress shots, here's the back side of the top just before I put all the pieces together. Since this is no way I could fit the quilt in my machine and there is no way on earth I was going to spent several days of my life quilting this by hand. I ironed down some heavy duty interfacing on the corners and stuck some heat 'n bond under the seams to keep them smooth after washing. Probably a little bit of overkill, but I liked the resulting super tidy seams.

So there seems to be limited interest right now, so I think I'll hold off for a few months before starting the next round. For anyone really interested, there is a Keep me Warm swap with sign up rights now that is simular to Make me a hat.

I just joined the Make me a scarf swap with the option of making extras. You think this one could stand alone?
It has the past two rounds. It's filled up both times before the end of the sign up period actually so we should be fine Smiley

I just recently got into crocheting a ton of hats, I would LOVE to do this swap! Do you think that there could be an option to do more than one hat?
.
I'll give the option to craft more, but purely for my own sanity, it will be optional and I won't be matching crafters based on how much they want to swap. The requirements will be as the last round, which is one knit or crocheted hat with any extras decided on between partners. The ides of this swap is that it's fun low pressure so I perfer to keep the requirements light.

Ok, I admit it, I cannot escape the appeal of this swap and even though I am up to my eyeballs in a post-grad program I am craving this swap. Any other yarnies have the hankering to make another hat? Sign ups in December, send outs in Feburary?
