1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Support Your Local Yarn Store on: August 11, 2008 12:08:52 PM
I'm going to preface this by saying that I know what it's like to live on a very tight budget and have bought yarn and knitting supplies at the big evil chains and on the internet myself.  I also swear that I do not nor have I ever owned a yarn store.

Having said that I heard a piece on NPR a few weeks ago that confirmed what I have been noticing in the last few years.  Local Yarn Stores are Disappearing!!  I have seen 4 out of 6 independent yarn stores in my area close.  I have seen stores that I visit whenever I travel close.  I have tried to track down stores in a dozen cities while traveling that are listed in the current phone book and on the web and are just empty store fronts.

The internet is both cheap and convenient.  I have bought tons of yarn in my pajamas, flaunting my bed hair-do.

I have bought my knitting supplies at Michael's, Joann's, and even the evil Wal-Mart.

Having said that, there is no pleasure for me that beats the independent yarn store.  Getting to touch, squeeze and smell the yarn.  Getting help and advice from owners and employees.  Seeing yarns that I've never seen before and patterns created by locals.  I plan outings, beg and plead with my boyfriend, bribe family members, scour the net for hours and neglect my nephews for the chance to visit these stores.  I bet there are others out there who feel the way I do.

I vow to try to patronize my local stores more, even just to pay a dollar more for needles.  Is anyone willing to join me?

2  UNITED STATES / Minnesota / Yarn shops in Bemidji area? on: June 29, 2008 01:16:59 PM
I am from Northern California and am going to Bemidji for a week in July.  Can anyone tell me if there are any yarn shops in the Bemidji area (besides the Joannes/chain stores)?  I doubt if I'm going to be able to get my boyfriend to take me farther than an hour away and there's no way he's going to let me drive around the Land of a Thousand Lakes alone! (he thinks I'm an idiot)  Thanks!
3  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / felt monsters on: September 16, 2007 03:38:54 PM
I made these as a sample for ones I'm going to make with my class.  (I work with special-needs boys)  My daughter suggested that I make the mini-monster for one of the teachers.  Just felt and wiggle-eyes and some fuzzy clearance fabric.

Here is mine...finally!

I used the KP Merino Style in storm, it took me 5 months of intermittent knitting and I ran out and had to order more.  It ended up too large for me (I'm sure I just wasn't precise enough measuring my gauge)  It fits my friend great, though!

5  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / my first stranded (?) knitting on: September 01, 2007 12:03:07 PM
I'm not sure if that's the correct technique name.

It's a little bunchy where it pulls but I think I learned enough doing this that it will be better next time.

6  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / The rise and fall of my stash on: August 08, 2007 06:39:40 PM

So I had to dramatically reduce and organize my stash this weekend so that my living room would be "socially acceptable"  It made me really sad when I saw that it had been reduced to this:

So like five minutes later the doorbell rings and it's FEDEX!!!

My yarn empire prevails over the oppression of my cruel signifigant other!!

(I'm not even sure if this photo-posting thing is going to work, be kind if all there is is a bunch of nonsense up there instead of pictures)
7  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Malabrigo color insanity on: May 06, 2007 07:01:49 PM
I think I'm short of yarn and I cannot find any more of the right dyelot.  (Malabrigo in Amoroso, just in case anyone's got a hoard of it)  I can get another in a different dyelot.

Are the dyelots for Malabrigo so dramatically different that switching every couple of rows will be freakish?  Do I need to unravel and start over?
