1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: Spring/Summer Hats: Do they exist? on: April 06, 2010 11:26:59 AM
I made a summer hat for my daughter last year (she was having bad hair issues).  I made Berocco's "Dizzy" (it's free on their website) in a cotton yarn.  It's got holes in it to keep it cooler.  She wore it every day for a month.

I totally get your hat-frenzy.  When I learned to make hats I made like 50 of them.

FINALLY!!  I have been yelling at Keith from my couch for 3 weeks!  Biggest prima-donna, can't-take-feedback, white-dude-from-Utah-dressed-like-a-gangster, whiner!  I can't even accurately rate his designs his personality is so annoying.

I was really glad that Leanne won.

Has anyone noticed that tan-guy is getting less annoying?

I have mixed feelings about Kenley, too.  I really like her and actually thought it was kind of funny (albeit rude) when she laughed at Daniel because they had been talking about how he always talks about his "impeccable taste".  I just hated it when partners sell each other out so it was especially bad when he threw Kelly under the train by talking about his "impeccable taste".

I have never laughed so hard as when Terri went off about Suede!  It was kind of crude but HILARIOUS!
5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Support Your Local Yarn Store on: August 11, 2008 12:08:52 PM
I'm going to preface this by saying that I know what it's like to live on a very tight budget and have bought yarn and knitting supplies at the big evil chains and on the internet myself.  I also swear that I do not nor have I ever owned a yarn store.

Having said that I heard a piece on NPR a few weeks ago that confirmed what I have been noticing in the last few years.  Local Yarn Stores are Disappearing!!  I have seen 4 out of 6 independent yarn stores in my area close.  I have seen stores that I visit whenever I travel close.  I have tried to track down stores in a dozen cities while traveling that are listed in the current phone book and on the web and are just empty store fronts.

The internet is both cheap and convenient.  I have bought tons of yarn in my pajamas, flaunting my bed hair-do.

I have bought my knitting supplies at Michael's, Joann's, and even the evil Wal-Mart.

Having said that, there is no pleasure for me that beats the independent yarn store.  Getting to touch, squeeze and smell the yarn.  Getting help and advice from owners and employees.  Seeing yarns that I've never seen before and patterns created by locals.  I plan outings, beg and plead with my boyfriend, bribe family members, scour the net for hours and neglect my nephews for the chance to visit these stores.  I bet there are others out there who feel the way I do.

I vow to try to patronize my local stores more, even just to pay a dollar more for needles.  Is anyone willing to join me?

The tan guy hurt to watch and Trash-bag lady is a Train -wreck!!  I really liked the woman who won.  I also liked the mop-sweater thing.

I am soooo excited the new season has started!  Project Runway is my favorite show!

My boyfriend even watches it!  He's gotten really good at guessing who's going to win and lose each challenge.  (And we're talking about a guy who wears nothing but polo shirts)

7  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: Time to Knit.... on: July 04, 2008 10:00:58 AM
I've been knitting for about six or seven years.  I made this scarf from "Last Minute Knitted Gifts" that says it takes six hours.  It probably took me 20 to 25 hours!  You do get faster as you do it more but you really have to enjoy the process or you'll get impatient.  I find that I'm faster when I knit for longer sittings because I get "warmed up".  If I knit in small chunks of time it takes me a lot longer.  If you are doing a long slow project you can sometimes restore your faith in the process by stopping to make a quick baby hat or something else ultra-fast.

Thanks!
9  UNITED STATES / Minnesota / Yarn shops in Bemidji area? on: June 29, 2008 01:16:59 PM
I am from Northern California and am going to Bemidji for a week in July.  Can anyone tell me if there are any yarn shops in the Bemidji area (besides the Joannes/chain stores)?  I doubt if I'm going to be able to get my boyfriend to take me farther than an hour away and there's no way he's going to let me drive around the Land of a Thousand Lakes alone! (he thinks I'm an idiot)  Thanks!
10  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / What's that FREAK doing? Oh My God, She's KNITTING! on: December 14, 2007 04:40:28 PM
I think that knitting's pretty tame but I've had two experiences in the last month where I was knitting and I might as well have been wearing a clown suit and carrying a chain saw judging by the looks I got.

          1) Downtown Las Vegas (on Fremont Street)

          2) A Tool concert (between acts)

What's the most surreal place you've ever knitted?
