1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Knitters: What are your values and norms? on: October 05, 2010 12:54:50 PM
Hi all,
 Smiley
I'm working on a sociology project on subcultures, and I decided to give a speech on the subculture of knitters! Yay! In my speech, I'm supposed to discuss the symbols, language, values, and norms of knitters. I've got the first two down, but I'm having trouble thinking of what the values and norms of knitters are, so I thought I'd ask you all.

values: standards that people use to decide what is desirable, good and beautiful, and that serve as a guideline for living.

norms: rules and expectations by which a society guided the behavior of its members.

So, what do you think are some values and norms of knitters as a whole?

Thank you so much in advance for your replies!

Sincerely,

Alex

3  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / ~Wanna get rid of old bags of chips and croutons? don't waste! (Fried Chicken!) on: June 26, 2009 09:38:27 AM
Do you have bags of chips that are only a 10th full?  How about old bags of croutons that got pushed to the back of the pantry? Don't know what to do with them? If so, read on!

I think, that, in this economy, nothing should go to waste.

Yesterday, my mother and I had an intense craving for fried chicken. She was ready to deep fry, but I offered to try to oven-fry the chicken instead. The chicken was ready, but when we checked the pantry, we couldn't find the breadcrumbs we thought we had. There were just a 1/3 bag of two week old potato chips, 3 bags of croutons from last months party, a 1/4 tin of french fried onions, and a sandwich bag of rice chex, all of which we were planning on throwing out.It was seven o'clock, and, not wanting to disappoint, I had my mother relax in the living room and I got to work! I put salt, pepper and garlic on the chicken legs. Then, in a separate bowl,  I crushed all of the chips and croutons and onions very finely (And added some parmesan cheese). After brushing the legs with a butter-garlic mix, I rolled them in the coating mixture, and put them in the oven at 375 degrees for 1 hour, flipping halfway through.

They came out really yummy!!!! And we didn't waste!

I hope you enjoy the recipe as much as we did.

Here's a picture of them after about 5 minutes in the oven:

4  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Where can I learn how to sew? on: June 24, 2009 09:49:56 AM
My family bought me a brother sewing machine for my birthday, because I am interested in learning how to sew some clothing/bags/aprons for myself. However, I know no one who knows how to sew. Should I try a class? Is there a website that has good instructions?

Thank you,

Snappity
5  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / ~*~*Reviews of Prepackaged Vegetarian and Vegan Foods*~*~ on: June 23, 2008 10:41:28 PM
I thought this would be a fun idea. I've recently decided to do a "trial run" with vegetarianism because I'm opposed to factory farming. Anyway, I'm too busy to cook a lot of the time, so I've been trying a lot of prepackaged/ready-made/frozen vegetarian and vegan foods.  I will post reviews and hopefully you will do the same!  Cheesy We can all learn from each other and know which products are worth buying.
6  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / What's a good first project? on: June 23, 2008 10:29:48 PM
I have never sewed but my mom has recently bought a new brother sewing machine and she said she will teach me this week! I really want to get into sewing clothes.  Do you know of any good books that have clear, simple instructions for using a sewing machine? And if you could point me in the direction of specific patterns/projects, that would be great!

Thanks!

10  KNITTING / Knitalongs / "New Year's Resolution" KAL on: January 03, 2008 01:25:52 PM
What have you resolved to knit this year?

I am going to attempt to knit:
1) A slouchy hat (Most likely Le Slouch)
2) My So-Called Scarf
3) A headband
4) A toy
5) Several Ipod Cozies/scarves
6) Possibly a blanket! (a VERY simple one.)

I need to learn how to use DPN's and Circulars

These are simple goals, but I really want to improve my knitting this year. Not to mention lose a little weight... Tongue

Are you with me? Let's reach our goals together!
