1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Cheap, eco-friendly, and a few bananas short of a bunch... on: October 11, 2008 09:38:46 PM
I played Bananagrams today at a friend's and I'm totally addicted.  Of course, I wanted a set to play at home, and wasn't so keen on spending 15 bucks to get one...

Since I have a tendency to pick up Scrabble games at yard sales and hang on to them, I assembled my own set in about 45 minutes using the following materials:

144 hoarded Scrabble tiles
1 old yellow tshirt from my stash
1 nylon drawstring from DS's old backpack

I'm as pleased as punch, and fighting the strong desire to freezer paper stencil the logo into my banana bag!

2  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Teacher Gifts on: June 01, 2007 01:14:29 PM
My kids each have several teachers, so we put together these little magnets in matchboxes for them.  We found the nifty illustrations in a school album I picked up at a thriftshop for a quarter.   They were quite well received!

3  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Crayon Carryall on: June 01, 2007 12:12:23 PM
Picture this:  it's late Saturday night when I remember that my kiddos have a birthday party to attend on Sunday morning.  Here are my options:

a) Midnight Walmart run

b) Midnight craft binge

c) skip the party altogether.

Needless to say, the correct answer is always b.  Here's the result, made of a recycled pair of jeans and some other goodies from my stash:

Best of all, I got to stay in my pj's, and didn't spend a cent!

4  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / I did it! And it looks "real!" on: May 31, 2007 04:02:25 PM
This is my first  real sewing project, which I made using the tute on tiny happy.  I am over the moon with the results!  The whole thing took about three hours, and I made it using two vintage thrifted sheets from my stash.  More to follow, I'm sure!

Craftster doesn't let me post photos yet, but here's a link or two to pics in my flickr:

5  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / End of conundrum. on: May 31, 2007 05:42:40 AM
I've been hoarding vintage thread and notions, thinking that one day I'd learn to sew.  Well, I finally got a machine, and found out that (snap!) thread has a (snap!) shelf life.

What to do with all my pretty (useless) wooden spools of thread?  I've been pondering this problem for awhile, and finally trashpicked a frame that solved everything:  http://tagsaletales.blogspot.com/  (sorry, Craftster won't let me post an image.)

6  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Advice and project ideas on: January 24, 2007 08:08:57 PM
I have a summer dream job---I'm the arts and crafts counselor at a sleepaway camp in the mountains.  I'm looking to get away from the "canned" A&C projects the camp has always done, and would love some ideas.

I have girls ranging in age from 8-15, and some are craftier than others.  Last year, we did some bookbinding, decopaged memory boxes, jewelry-making, polymer clay, and copper enameling stuff, in addition to a bevy of quickie projects like stationery and hot rocks.

My funds are pretty decent (I get about 3 grand to spend for 8 weeks and 400 kids) but I prefer to use recycled materials as much as possible.

Right now I'm thinking cigar box purses, sock monkeys, and maybe some sort of knitting or crocheting project, but I'd love any input from the crafty world at large.

Thanks!
Wendy
