1  Craft Swaps / ACTIVE SWAPS WHERE SIGN-UP PERIOD HAS CLOSED / Re: IYP 23: Summer Do-Si-Do Signups closed! Sendouts 6/10/13 on: May 14, 2013 11:33:27 AM
I have not had as much time to craft this last week as I would like to  Sad  It is the end of the school year and I have had field trips, field day, teacher gifts to make...you get the picture.  I am planning to do some tonight, hopefully!  Chughes225 and I are swapping a small, medium and large.  The medium and large are all planned, but I keep changing my mind on the small.  I just need to pick and get started.  I think I have crafting ADD

I'm working away on my "big" project for chughes225.  I'm sewing without a pattern and all I have to say is I'm thankful I'm married to an engineer...he has had to do some calculations to get it right, but it is looking great.

Chughes225 and I are getting to know each other before the big dance Smiley  I'm crafting one item now and plotting the others.  This is my first swap so I'm a little giddy.

This will be my first swap and I'm so excited!  I'm swapping with chughes225 and I'm already gathering supplies.  Any advice for a newbie?

7  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Silk Harry Potter Scarf on: January 08, 2013 07:30:56 AM
I have been having some fun silk painting and decided to make a Harry Potter scarf for a friend.  It is only my second silk painted project (and the first was very forgiving for mistakes).  I love how it turned out except for Harry's glasses.  Ugh.  They are a little wonky.  I made it for a friend, but since I don't like the glasses I think I will make her a different one...not sure what I'll do with this one.  The background I decided to give it a batik kind of look so when the paint was wet you put salt on it.  My kids loved that part.

On the stretcher with salt on it.

Close up of the sorting hat.

The whole thing.

Thanks everyone Smiley  I did use resist to make these.  It is fun to do once you get the hang of it.  I just finished a Harry Potter scarf last night (almost finished I guess, I need to iron and wash it).  It is a little addicting.

For Christmas I wanted to make my niece some silk butterfly wings for her to play dress up with.  I found a tutorial on how to make some adorable tie dyed butterfly wings, but I decided I wanted hers to look like a monarch butterfly.  So, after watching about 10 hours of youtube videos on how to paint on silk I ordered the supplies and gave it a go.  For my first try I think they turned out nice.  There are definitely things I would do different, but she likes them and that is all that matters.  I don't have a picture of her playing in them yet.  They were lots of fun to do and my boys (8 and 4) got to help paint them.  Boys rock, but sometimes it is nice to take a break from lego, star wars, and car crafts and do something girly Smiley

The tutorial I followed for making the wings:  http://thismamamakesstuff.com/2009/11/week-of-tutorials-silk-scarf-butterfly-wings/

Here they are traced, stretched and ready to be painted:

Some of the spots are done:

And finally completed:
