1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / advice for mens shirt / sheer fabric? on: April 18, 2007 05:00:37 PM
So this weekend, I am going to be making my best guy friend a pullover//henley type of thing.

I bought this fabric he loves [BRIGHT, bold orange and magenta stripes], it's very very sheer, and I was thinking of doubling it up, so it's not super girly, you know, two layers, and he would wear a t-shirt under it.

I am going to size it against a henley he already has that fits him well. I am not prewashing the fabric, because it seems too delicate.

Is there any reason it shouldn't keep its shape and size if he only handwashes it? I am just so nervous about it even fitting him at all, because a lot of his stuff seems to get misshapen and shrunken, I have no idea why. Hopefully the sheerness will be the only challenge in sewing?

any advice//stories about menswear, sheer fabric, washing, etc? Thanks
2  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / cleaning thrift store clothing? on: April 09, 2007 07:59:27 AM
I have never shopped at a thriftstore, but I like some of the stuff I see on the boards.

seeing as how someone else has worn the clothing before, is there a good way to clean them REALLY well? Is washing them in hot water enough? What do you guys do?
3  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Serger purpose? on: February 05, 2007 10:14:23 AM
Hello!
I was recently asking around for tips on making bathsuits out of real bathingsuit material, and a few people recommended a serger.
I looked it up, but can't really figure out how it's different from a normal sewing machine.
Any help? Thanks!

5  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / P!ATD Band T-shirt to Tank ... first reconstruction on: January 27, 2007 08:52:44 PM
Hello!
Reconstructed band t-shirt.
Went from

to this:

I resized and tapered the shirt, then cut it into a tank top.  I put in another tank top for straps and a built-in bra.  I added a double-lip to the bottom 'hem' [not shown], and added tulle to the front.  The edges are rather unhemmed and ruffle off, kind of.  My first reconstruction.

Any constructive criticism in definitely welcomed
