41  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / I think I hate drop spindles on: April 13, 2007 01:51:32 PM
I am feeling very frustrated right now. I have been trying to learn to spin. I bought a top whorl drop spindle and a bottom whorl top spindle. I have read all the instructions and I think I understand what should happen in theory. However, all of my attempt with these spindles have failed. I put the leader on, i attach the leader to my fiber, i start spinning the spindle, the leader yarn begins to spin quickly--- and my fiber just sits there- it doesn't spin or do anything. I have tried this several times and I can't understand what I am doing wrong. I really want to spin. I LOVE yarn and would love to be able to create it. I also have a fiber hook up (my friends mom has a big farm with tons of sheepies).

Do you think maybe spindle spinning just isn't right for me? It seems like a wheel would be faster and easier for me. I really want to spin and I don't think I am going to be able to get into it using a spindle, but I don't know how wise it would be to go buy a wheel, what if I don't like that? Is there anyone here who hates spindles but loves to spin on a wheel? Should I just go buy one and give it a try?
42  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Copyrights. Whats legal?? on: March 29, 2007 11:11:53 PM
I am pretty sure it is NOT ok to sell knitted or crocheted objects made from a copyrighted pattern.

What about clothes, jewelry, beading, or quilting?? Can you make a bracelet from a book using different beads and putting your own touch on it that way and still sell it legally?

Also when designing patterns can you majorly modify a pattern but base it off of the same motif (granny square for example) but modify the whole look of the piece? I have been getting lots of ideas for crochet patterns but most of them are based off of other patterns- I'm not talking about simple modifications like putting two extra ch sts or something very small- but changing the whole look of the piece.

If anyone knows the answers to my questions or knows of a place where I could find some answers it would really help me out! Thanks in advance!
43  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Drawstring shorts? on: March 29, 2007 02:10:15 PM
Do any of you know of a good pattern for shorts with no zipper but with a drawstring waist? I really want to make some nice shorts for the summer! Please let know if you find any!
44  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / skirt from a dress on: March 28, 2007 10:20:40 PM
I am really new to sewing. In fact this is the first thing I have actually completed (in my adult years). I took an old dress and turned it into a simple drawstring skirt. I am really happy with the results and it took me all of 15 minutes! This is major to me as I am a knitter/crocheter by trade and 15 minute projects NEVER happen! I hope you like it!

45  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Suggest New Boards and New Features / Resin on: March 27, 2007 09:16:05 PM
I think it would be very cool to have a board for Resin crafts. People do so many cool things with resin and I am getting into the technique- but its hard to find inspiration on craftster because i never know where to look to find resin projects.
46  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / in a rut.... on: March 20, 2007 08:20:04 PM
ok. so i am a knitter. i have been knitting for about 6 years. i love to knit and i feel like it is a huge part of my identity. recently (on superbowl sunday) i learned to crochet. i haven't picked up the needles since. i love crocheting, its fast and extremely easy. but i don't want to get out of the habit of knitting. i am looking for a fast project to knit up in between my adventures in crochet. maybe a headband or some other small non hat assessorie. please help me find a good fast project that will remind me of my love for knitting!

sorry this post is so vague and pointless, just wondering if any of you craftsters have any ideas since nothing really seems appealing to me anymore!

49  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Embellishing Clothes With Fancy Stitches on: March 02, 2007 02:23:46 PM
I just got a new sewing machine that has a bunch of fancy stitches. I am looking for ways to embellish my clothes using these stitches. I put a vine border around the collar of one of my shirts, but I can't really think of much else to do. Any ideas?
50  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / crochet meets other crafts on: February 25, 2007 03:42:48 PM
i hope i can explain what i am talking about in a way that makes sense.

i am looking for crochet patterns for embellishing clothes. lacey yoke patterns that can be sewed onto a shirt, edging for sweaters or skirts... things along those lines.

online patterns, pattern books, anyplace i can find these patterns would really help me out!
