1  Re: Traveling Little Visitor Swap Round 23 Gallery! in The Swap Gallery by Wildfyre on: August 03, 2016 01:07:59 PM
We had a very nice family day trip yesterday and Baranof got to see some very interesting and amazing large structures...

roler - take note for your visit!! Wink

First of all we went to the Falkirk Wheel - it's a structure built to connect the Union Canal and the Forth & Clyde Canal. The wheel replaced a stair case of 11 locks over a height difference of 35m.  It was opened in 2002. The Wheel only takes 1.5 kWh of energy to turn (same as boiling 8 kettles).

They've made a big fun area on the basin and around with water play for kids, water zorbing etc. We've yet to actually go ON the Wheel, but the structure is amazing as it is. Smiley

After the Wheel we went to the Kelpies, which are just about 10 mins drive away (or you could walk/cycle there - 6km).

They're named after the very strong water spirits which are said to inhabit the lochs and pools of Scotland and appear in horse's form (or human). The Kelpies in Falkirk are a monument to horse powered heritage across Scotland. The horse's heads stand 30m tall from the ground (that's taller than the sphinx) and have an underground structure of 35m more.

Both structures are absolutely amazing, and free to visit.

Today we're going into town as the Hobbitses need to have their pre-school eye testing done. And we're hopefully going down to the Harbour so my big sis can take some photos of lighthouses. Smiley

I love the Kelpies Smiley and that wheel is AMAZING!

We just got back from longlining. It's very fast paced and can be dangerous so I couldn't take photos while we were actualy pulling gear. I did get a few photos of some of the fish we caught and released-

a skate

and grenadier

and occasionally some deep sea starfish or brittlestars come up with the fish. I put them in a tin so my kiddo could look at them before we set them loose. Nessie checked them out too-

Omoigosh that play park looks amazing! My 4 year old is jealous of Baranof lol

We're stuck in port for a while waiting on a new autopilot thats being installed.

Meanwhile, we took Nessie for a walk through Totem Park https://www.nps.gov/sitk/index.htm

It was raining, but it usualy is here. That whole temperate rainforest thing  Cheesy

Indian River runs through the park. It will be FULL of spawning salmon soon

The trash cans around here are all bear resistant for good reason -

Then back to the boat. Hard to see but my son is holding Nessie up above his head for the photo-

We are getting ready to head out for the big King Salmon opener. Nessie helped tie gear-

Yesterday she found a possible relative at the library :-)

So jealous of all the people getting to meet other members in person this round

Aww, Baranof looks dashing in that tie Smiley

We took a couple days off and went up to Peril Strait to do some shrimping. We caught a few shrimp-

and one pot had a lot of half eaten shrimp and an octopus. We sorted him out into the bucket briefly for a few photos before setting him loose  Smiley

Then Nessie got to see one of Baranof's wild relatives. The ABC Brown Bear. We actually saw a ton of them, every time we pulled into a bay we scared off 2 or 3 bears. But it's really hard to get a photo that shows the bear well enough to tell what it is, AND see Nessie in the photo as well. So this was the best I could do. We saw a sow and three cubs while hiking. I wish I could have gotten a photo of Nessie and them, the cubs were so cute! But we got the heck out of there as soon as we saw them.

Beautiful! We rarely see those huge picture-perfect rainbows here.
Usually it's half rainbows.. but Nessie did get to see one

Here's our nature post. Nessie with one of my two all time favorite plants :-) Sundew! (Drosera rotundifolia) It's a little carnivorous plant that grows all over the boggy areas in Alaska.

Captain America! Awesome  Cheesy

So we headed out of town last night to anchor up and start fishing early today. Really early.. It's 3am so if I misspell anything forgive me.
I took a few photos on our way through..

The view of the Pioneer Home in downtown Sitka as we passed by.

Looking back at O'Connel bridge. When it was built in the 70's it was the first of its type built in the US. It connects Sitka to the airport  Smiley

I had some nice purchases this week... Baranof inspected them and liked them, I think. Wink

After months of playing Lego Harry Potter (years 1-4 only) I decided the girls are ready to get introduced to the Books. And that was of course the ONLY reason for me to buy the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Fantastic Beasts & Quidditch through the Years was on offer (2 for 7), and Beedle the Bard was just on the same shelf.. And the fact that I pre-ordered "The Cursed Child" has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a Potterhead... ummm... Wink

Awesome! I can't wait until kiddo is old enough for Harry Potter :-)

We have been recovering from a very long day of flying, delayed flights, and rough landings. But Nessie is now in Sitka Alaska! We head out fishing tonight so I'll post pics when we get back in in a few days.

Until then, considering all the Disney photos in the gallery I thought it was amusing which plane we flew to Alaska on -

Took Nessie to the park today, and my son promptly knocked my camera out of my hands and the lens broke when it hit the ground.  Undecided
So here are a couple quick cell phone shots  Tongue I'll post better ones soon.

Nessie with the Washington State Flower -

and looking across Hood Canal at the Olympic Mountains. Not the best view of them, she will see better I promise
