11  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Soaps! on: November 10, 2006 11:35:12 AM
I sell packaging to a number of soapmakers and here in western Canada I find there are LOTS of people making soap and bath bombs.  I think it still a good idea for craft shows.  The businesses that I see succeed are the ones that make something unique.  If it were me I would try and use really trendy colours and different shapes than what everone else has.  You could go more for a spa look or just really fun or both.  Also, if you can tie into anything in your area that would be good, for example someone around here made soaps with goofy wilderness themes ie. moose poop, beaver butt etc. and one company went for more of a forest spa type of idea.

Also, I would offer a better price if people buy more than one soap ie. 1 for $3. or 2 for $5.

Have fun!

That's really cute.....but zippers scare me!!!!  beyond my straight line sewing abilities.  I'll have to be brave and try again.

17  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: Stinky fish on: November 09, 2006 07:09:58 AM
I'm from the west coast in Canada and am very luck to have awesome fresh fish available all year.   I love salmon and halibut.  My favorite way to cook salmon is on the BBQ.  Take a salmon filet put it on a piece of tin foil, skin side done.  season with a little salt and pepper.  Make sure the BBQ is really hot and slide the salmon on the foil right on the grill.  Close the lid and reduce heat to medium.  It should only take about 10 minutes.  DO NOT OVERCOOK!   Squeeze a little lemon on and there you go.  if you don't have a BBQ you can also do this in a hot oven.

Another tip - if you're cooking fish and don't like the smell in your house boil a pan of with water and viniger or lemon for a few minutes ...it really helps

I really like spagetti squash.  If you haven't tried it.....it's just like spagetti noodles.  You take the squash cut it in half, scoop out the seeds.  Put it upside down on a plate and cover with clear wrap.  microware for 7 to 10 minutes.  Let is cool a little and scoop it out of the shell.  It comes out like noodles.  Cover with your favorite sauce.
19  COOKING / Dessert / Re: Fondant? on: November 09, 2006 06:51:59 AM
Fondant is edible but kind of nasty!  You can make it yourself which I heard tastes better but not really great.  If you like I'll see if I can find a recipe for it.  It's a lot less expensive but hard to get the same texture.  Marzipan works really well but some people like and some do not and it is a creamy colour so doesn't work well for some colours.

Have fun!
