To make a potholder you would use the basic afghan pattern and make it smaller - probably join it and crochet in the round - and then sew the points together to make it lie flat
Experiment and have fun.
If you figure it out - post a pattern please

Here is a pic of the costume I made for my Daughter for Halloween
It was made using no patterns - the only thing not made by me was the crinoline and the headband
