21  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Pretty hunk of circuit board on: October 15, 2014 10:47:19 AM
Seriously. All copper instead of the usual green. I had to do something with it. So, I took apart a multi strand necklace that had beads in clear, amber, black, gold, and iridescent. Two strands were affixed top and bottom, and loose beads were placed on the board itself where the tiny openings were. The frame is a frankenframe I put together. The frame itself was a cheap white framed mirror-I removed the mirror,it just had a thin cardboard backing that was falling apart. The now empty frame was painted black, then rub n buffed copper. The black backing is from a cheap High School Musical shadowbox. It was just the right size. Circuit board was nestled in a diy cardboard frame I cobbled together with tape and glue and paint, then a ton of good old E6000 to affix it to the background.
Yeah, kind of odd, I know, but I like it. I just wish I had more copper circuit board of any size now. Cheesy
the color is nicer in real life!

Teeny cap gun key chains from the Dollar Store, and tiny frames and a plaque from various thrifting trips, scrapbook paper, paint, and rub 'n buff. I love the skull that was embossed on the hilt of the piratey  one and had to silver it and bring it out.

24  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Superman lamp, pic heavy on: October 03, 2014 07:51:21 AM
Thrift store lamp, takes a teardrop 60 watt bulb. Lampshade I already had-I meticulously painted my daughter's ball lamp to be a Bob-omb lamp, then found out the lamp no longer worked! So, I salvaged the lampshade. Grr.
Anyway! Shade painted black, Between the small bulb and the painted shade, this is not a light up a dark room or do homework by it lamp. But it looks cool. The Superman pages were from a beat up children's book. Glued down, and the whole thing covered with brush on clear sealer. The lamp was originally a tired brassy color and maroon, I painted it black and gold.

Do kids even know what a phone booth is anymore? Up,Up,and Away!

Clark Kent hears a cry for help! Oh no, a bank robbery!

Time to rip off the shirt and take to the sky! And what kind of white shirt does he have that the bright blue and red long johns don't show through? Does he hid his cape under that shirt too?

Does he wear those red boots to the Daily Planet?

Cowed by his super might as well as his fashion sense, the bank robbers wisely surrender.

One more pic.

The next lamp,I bite the bullet and go out and make color photocopies of my comic pages. I've found out that nothing keeps the printing on the reverse of the page from showing through-not gluing it to white paper, or black paper, or painting the back,or brushing on a base coat of mod podge/white glue. Here, with the shade itself black, it works fine-plus, these aren't thin comic book pages, but pages from a battered book.
25  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Six geek ornaments on: October 01, 2014 08:33:00 AM
Dollar Store frame ornaments I bought last year that were gold and covered in glitter. Black paint, rub 'n buff, and images added-still need new ribbon.
Lost in Space robot, and image from Rossum's Universal Robots, where the term began.

A zeppelin over Manhatten,and Voyager 1.

Moon landing astronaut, and hot air balloon.

Oh yeah, and Tesla.

The interesting clay beads are handmade, and a gift from a fellow crafster. Almost all my chain stash-I need another thrift store trip!-,tiny mirrors, gold pearl beads from a cheap necklace, and a long string of beigiesh-greyish pearl beads from an old broken necklace. The base? A cheap piece of wall art from Dollar General, spray painted black, then lightly oversprayed with gold. And good old E6000.
27  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Steampunky pearl handled revolver on: September 13, 2014 06:16:01 PM

pearl handled revolver 002 by chicgeekcf4l, on Flickr

A cheap plastic toy that had good embossing. Blue, copper and black paint, rub n buff, and tons of white  nail polish, with a tiny tiny bit of pink to attempt a hint of mother of pearl iridescence.
The two white gears are from a couple of cheap plastic tape runners after I'd used them up.
28  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Using magazine pages without the other side showing through? on: September 12, 2014 07:57:20 PM
So, I saw some lampshades on Pinterest decorated with comic book pages. And I just happen to have a small spare lampshade and some beat up comic books. Decoupaging them on things like boxes, they're fine. But something light shine through? Not so good. I tried painting the back of a test panel with white paint. I tried gluing another test panel to a white sheet of paper. You can still see the printing on the other side when they're help up to the light.
The obvious solution is to make color copies. But, I do not have a working printer, and going to Kinkos to make color copies would get expensive fast.
Anyone know of a technique for this? Thanks!
29  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Rocket Ship...thing on: September 11, 2014 07:35:12 PM
The round thing is some part to some toy, who knows what? Painted the red plastic black, then went over it with silver. A sample piece of fabric in a retro atomic print glued to cardboard to fit inside, and a space ship. You know I couldn't find a toy spaceship anywhere?I bought a party favor bag of plastic planes,or maybe they're space shuttles?, from Dollar Tree. Took two,cut off the wings, glued them together, painted it red with a little silver, and glued a couple of thumbtacks to the back. Reminded me of an old metal toy with the paint wearing off.
Not completely happy with it, but it's done for now.

30  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / More mirrors! on: September 11, 2014 07:22:42 PM
I had two weird plastic circle things from the odd toy bin at the thrift store. Orange, clear plastic, I have no idea what they were. Painted them, added mirrors from a compact, and flower stems from Dollar Store clearance garden decor.

The metal stems are held on with strips of aluminum tape from the hardware store.
Neck, a white glass plate with a scalloped edge from the resale shop. It already had a plate hanger on it. I took a Dollar Tree makeup mirror, took off the suction cups, painted it, glued on shiny purple beads, glued itto the plate where it fit perfectly, then edged it with a couple of rows of tiny pearl beads.
Lookit my fancy hawaiian shirt! ^_^

And a pic that came out too dark, but shows of the scalloped edge.

Last,an old compact! The gold was all scratched up. Painted the top in a mix of gold and green, darker green and purple for the center leaf and flower. The inside had a mirror on top, and the bottom was meant to hold face powder. I brushed some black and gold inside, and added three tiny circle mirrors.
