11  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Re: First Diaper Bag... on: May 24, 2007 08:08:02 AM
Ha! I may have learned to do patterns in Home Ec, but that was at least 15 years ago - and I hadn't been near a sewing machine from that point until January this year. So, even if I learned it at one point, I completely lost it. My biggest problem is that I learn by doing, which means I'm great friends with my seam ripper, and I go reallllllly slow. Smiley If I get ahead of myself, that's when I make mistakes. But, I like things that don't look like something everyone else has, which is why I just like to use the basic ideas of a tute and go from there. The tute is so I can learn how to do things (like those darn elastic pockets that I LOVE) - they were also great for things that seem so simple now, but I couldn't figure out...

thanks ladeis - sewing skills are fairly new - other than the standard home-ec class I took in jr. high - I've only been sewing a few months. I still have not idea how to read a pattern (either that, or I'm lazy and don't have enough room to really try) so the tutes have been great on here. I got my sewing machine for christmas, and it's just a basic one. Now that I've learned how to use it, and that I truly love it, as soon as I get more room I'll probably upgrade!

So basically, I've been sewing about 4 months, and have made maybe 4 or 5 bags - runnermom - most of them have been from your hobo bag tute so Thanks!!

Phew! It's finished. My middle sister delivered her first baby at 29 weeks back in October. Now that my niece is out of the NICU and able to go on outings with mommy, I thought I'd put my new sewing skills to work to make her a diaper bag... since I've no idea how to post a pic here I posted all the details and loads more pics on my blog - check it out - any and all comments greatly appreciated....

It's actually Italian, and the word for May is Maggio. Hm. You may have something with that. But I fear that many may not know what that means. May Flowers. Maggio Fiori. Not sure.

I like the suggestions though, keep them coming.

Yes, he's amazing. That's the name of the song he wrote about me. It's wonderful - I love it, which is why I thought of that.

Um, wow, I didn't think I'd run out of possibilities so soon...

I ran out of steam finishing my sister's new diaper bag (and if I must say so myself, I would consider it upscale - she lives in Houston, and therefore is very hip but understated Smiley - it's gorgeous fabric and as soon as I finish it I will post here to get better opinions)

Hi, I wanted some input - general ideas etc. I've been making bags for the past 6 months and have gotten pretty good with a few of my own designs. I've only been making them for myself and family/friends, but have gotten tons of compliments. I'm thinking in the future I would like to sell them, and want to have a label/name in the bags that I'm giving away as gifts. I'd also like to have business cards so when I do receive compliments I could hand a biz card to them.

Anyway... I don't have any recent samples of my bags. They vary from reversible tote bags, hobos, wristlets, cosmetic bags and the newest - and most likely my focus - diaper bags! I love fun, funky fabrics, but also love soft, neutral, muted colors.

My blog is flowers in may (from a song my bf wrote about me) and I usually put some sort of flower in all my bags (a button, a zipper pull, a charm...) I thought about using flowers in may, but there is already someone on etsy with that, so I'm looking for any and all other ideas out there. I thought about the italian word (i was an italian major in college, speak it fluently, and lived in florence) fiori, but really - any help would be great.

Thanks craftsers!
