1  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 55 ENTRIES / Crochet Mama on: October 07, 2010 09:52:03 PM

I've wanted to make a granny square pixel art blanket for a while, and I've always wanted to enter a Craftster Challenge, so here I am, killing two birds with one stone! Smiley

I started by hand-drawing my pattern in MS Paint - a pixellated version of Mama.  I placed her on a purple gingham background to keep with the Mama "feel".

I wanted a nice soft blanket - to make sure it got plenty of use - so I chose to use Caron Simply Soft yarn and a size “G” crochet hook.  I was limited by the available colors of yarn, so there isn't as much shading as I would have liked.  After gathering the yarn, I had to edit the pattern to reflect what I had.

Then I crocheted.  I crocheted and I crocheted and I crocheted.

To help keep count and to keep myself organized, I bundled the granny squares into groups of 10, tying them by the yarn tails.

Then I sewed a little,

and finally, I got this:

Detail shot:

My wonderful new Crafting Mama blanket measures approximately 45" x 60".

In all, this project took over 100 hours.  About 3 hours making and editing the pattern, about 80 hours of crocheting more than 1000 1.5" granny squares, and nearly 40 hours to sew it all together and weave in ends.  I started the day Craftster Challenge #55 was announced, and just finished today.  Thanks for looking!

3  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Sheik Scarf (Legend of Zelda) with chart! on: September 02, 2010 12:53:10 AM
I made a Sheik scarf for a Zelda swap, and wanted to share it here!

I started by making a 5' long white scarf in stockinette stitch, then I used duplicate stitch to put the Eye of Truth symbol on it.  That's the symbol on Sheik's tabard.

Here is the chart I used:

More detailed instructions - including the scarf pattern - can be found here http://raisingganon.blogspot.com/2010/08/sheikah-scarf.html
I figured the knitting board on Craftster would already know how to knit a basic scarf, and the chart was the important part!
4  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Completed Projects / Dumbledore Amigurumi on: September 02, 2010 12:44:26 AM
I was recently in a Harry Potter swap (round 8, in fact) and I made an amigurumi of my partner's favorite character: Dumbledore!

It was my first time making up my own pattern, and my first non-animal amigurumi!  I'm trying to write a real pattern for it, and it's being tested now.  I will update this thread when the pattern is done, thank you for your patience (and many thanks to my lovely pattern testers!)
5  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Legend of Zelda digital art on: August 28, 2010 11:38:38 PM
I was recently in a Zelda swap, and I made the following pieces for my partner's wall:

I also made some Lon-Lon Milk bottle labels (sized for a baby bottle) but with extra backs so they can be put on larger bottles.  I couldn't decide if I wanted to have the in-game style label or more stylized versions... or in vEnglish or Hylian... so I just did them all! XD

I wanted to share the labels, so I made all of them into PDF files which I then put in a ZIP file available here:

7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / One Tiny Zelda Thing on: August 09, 2010 09:06:37 PM
I know we're looking at a full-on Zelda Christmas swap around the new year (thanks in advance, DizzerSpinninRound), but we need something to tide us over!

I'm taking DizzerSpinninRound's idea for a OTT swap and running with it.  Granted, I've never organized a swap before, but I think a OTT swap is a good place to start, right?

So... who's in for a OTZT (One Tiny Zelda Thing) swap?  I'm thinking sign-ups September 1-15, sendouts mid-October?
8  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Baby Afghans on: February 11, 2010 03:41:52 PM
One of my pregnant friends and I want to swap blankets for our babies-to-be, but I don't seem to have any good patterns that aren't very plain, or very girly (ruffles and flowers just won't do for boy babies!)  So far, the only one that I remotely like is the Lion Brand Tree of Life baby-sized blanket.

Do you have any suggestions for a nice baby blanket or afghan pattern?
