I think you could use that pattern and replace the lace with k1 p1, but here are some other patterns:

Any designs with simple blocks and/or stripes can look pretty manly with the right fabrics.

Does he have any interests?  I have seen pieced blocks that have airplane shapes, lighthouse shapes, boat shapes, etc.

To crochet an oval, instead of joining your initial chain into a loop, and crocheting around that, you crochet a length of chain, single crochet back down the chain, then all the way around the other side of it, (but I guess it would need an increase at the ends).

my goals for now:

finish crochet halloween wreath (by Oct 31st) done!
make pincushion (I desperately need one) (by Oct 31st) done!
finish crayon tote (by Nov 5th)
sew sky strips for winter night quilt (by Nov 5th)

and a couple of small ones:
hit thrift store for fabric
make notes from library books and return!
