22  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / nurse and bonus tea towels on: May 28, 2008 05:10:15 PM
My partner has received these now and I wanted to share them over here.  I'm really proud of the nurse since I really didn't use a pattern but just a basic trace for the body and then I did the hair, clothes and shoes on my own. I used the sublime lettering (mod mode?) though for the text.

What's unique and the reason I'm sharing the tea towels is that this is the most blackwork I've ever done.  I found it left me craving color...and it was especially tricky creating the sense that the dice were separate from the banner.  I did the banner in backstitch that I subsequently wrapped and the dice in a thicker chain stitch.  If you have experience with blackwork I'd love to hear some tricks and ideas Wink  The lettering on this is all free-hand.

25  NEEDLEWORK / Sublime Stitching Embroidery / Betting on some zzz... on: March 24, 2008 01:19:26 PM
These are some pillow cases I made for my friend whos having a tough time sleeping right now.  I used Jennys expression for her pillow and the title of a Ray Condo and the Ricochets song for the other oneall the details are indicative of him and he loves the especially the cards which are the Aces and 8s (the deadmans hand).  I think it is easier to sleep on a darker colored pillow case so I used red because it is the darkest color I can still transfer on to Wink  Note to self though that lint is not your friend when photographing dark colors in bright daylight the lines really are sharp but the lint has made them look fuzzy.

If the flames on the dice look familiar it is because I retro-fitted them from the martini glass Wink

Details of swap: This swap is super fun and a great way to get to know people and improve your skills.  Beginners and experienced hand embroiderers have all enjoyed this swap.  The swap consists of an embroidery tour.  You can send a cloth napkin, an apron, or a tea towel, whatever you choose your item should be a light weight, light colored (preferably white) fabric, suitable for hand embroidery, and inexpensive to mail.  If you have time before the send date you can embroider a little something on your item but it is more important the item (from here on out referred to as towel) go out on time.

Before you send attach with a safety pin or baste a tag to your towel with your name and address and put your towel into a Ziploc bag.  You may want to include a card to your fellow stitchers letting them know a little about you or your kitchen.

When you receive a towel YOU HAVE ONE WEEK from its arrival date until it needs to shipped out again.  If you have time take a photo and post your design but do not let this interfere with getting it shipped in the one week time frame.

When a towel arrives you need to let your group organizer and the sender know.

When you ship a towel you must PM the receiver and your group organizer and let them know (include the DC #).  If you are running late let your group organizer know.

Communication is key failure to communicate could result in you being skipped.

Although this idea originally started with Sublime Stitching you can use any embroidery pattern you like. Please remember that several people need to embroider it in a short amount of time so pick something that fits with your skill level and allotted time frame (one week).

Anyone who is not in contact on a weekly basis via posts or PMs without prior notification will be considered flaking.  FLAKERS SLOW DOWN THEIR WHOLE GROUP, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR SCHEDULE CAN ACCOMODATE THE TIME COMMITMENT.  The estimated time for completion of this swap is early to mid April.

29  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / First Quilt - for Rockabilly Swap on: November 08, 2007 04:26:25 PM
So I have to admit I am not very familiar with this board but I wanted some opinions from experieced quilters on my first project.

I've sewn for years and did some patchwork projects in school but never made a quilt.  I made this one for my swap partner and she loves it.  I really liked it but I was worried it wasn't rockabilly enough and that I should have machine quilted it.  What do you think?  The design is called brickwall and it is about 42 by 56.  I had lots of help from my mom and sister (experts) and I managed to do pretty well sourcing the fabric for a deal.

30  NEEDLEWORK / Sublime Stitching Embroidery / veggie tea towel stay tuned for fruit! on: November 04, 2007 08:04:52 AM
I went to visit my sister last month at her new house so I had to make her some tea towels Smiley  I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the fruit one but when I get a photo from her I will post it...my brother in-law says that my sister and I are the only adults he knows who use the words yummy and yucky.

the tomato was my favorite on this one Smiley
