7591  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: my aggressive snowflake.... on: March 30, 2008 05:20:32 PM
Thanks for the pattern! I totally don't understand it right now, but once I learn how to tat, I'm sure it'll make more sense.

Thanks again!

This is lovely! I bought a couple of tatting shuttles and some cotton so I could try to learn how. I don't think I'll be ready for this for quite a while, but it is something to work towards Wink
7593  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Science IS Art Swap! (Sign-ups 3/24 - 4/7, Sendouts by 5/7) on: March 30, 2008 01:55:59 PM
Darn you, AlternaWidget, for posting such fun pics of items! Wink I have been avoiding the swap boards to keep from signing up for swaps. A former swap partner clued me in to this swap, but I still stayed away...until I saw the pics (same thing happened with the Jar of Whimsies swap).

So, I'm thinking seriously about joining this one. Problem is, I have to be able to make everything from my stash. This does leave me a ton of options (I have a large and varied stash), however.

I went to college specifically for genetics, but realized I didn't have the single-minded personality it seemed to require. I ended up with a degree in biology and stuck around for a year of grad school in plant cell culture. I worked on a NASA funded grant to study growing plants in space. It sounded pretty cool, but it was lonely work. So, I took some time off and then went back to school and got a degree in education. I taught middle school science (grades 7 & 8 ) for 13 years, and now I'm a science specialist in a K-5 school. I love learning about science and sharing science with others. I just didn't like doing science. But, I am thinking of applying for a 6 week summer research program for teachers at one of the local colleges. Bioengineering...sounds kind of interesting!

In general, I'm interested in all of the sciences to some degree. I tend to favor the life sciences, though. And, as much as I hated chemistry, molecular structures are so fascinating!

So...now that I've introduced myself, I guess I should go and sign up. Especially since I keep coming up with ideas as I'm sitting here!

7594  CROCHET / Crochetalongs / Re: 2008 12" Squares ~ MAR on: March 30, 2008 12:31:31 PM
and I STILL haven't even started March  Roll Eyes

The March square seems pretty quick, so you should be able to catch up soon once you start it!

Your squares came out great, makeene! I like the yellow and green combo on the hearts one (although it makes me think of a 4 leaf clover on yours).

I've printed out the April square from '07- It's the butterfly garden one and I've been itching to make it since I first saw it. I didn't want to do the squares out of order, though. So, as soon as it's finished, I can start on the '08 square. So, even though I won't be home until after 10 pm on Tuesday, that's okay Wink

Very nice, makeene! Which patterns did you use? I like the one made with the pinks!

And, it's funny- the blue one in the lower left did something similar in it's pattern/striping to one of the ones I did. It started out with a very regular pattern, and then about 2/3 of the way through, it went all wonky!

I have more laundry to do today, so I may be able to knock out another one...

Oh my! I'm worried about filling a pint jar and you guys are on to gallons! Eeek! OF course, I haven't started putting stuff in my jar yet. I may run out of room quickly, too...
7598  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Re: *Tutorial* on Paper Piecing *Extra pattern + tut added!* on: March 30, 2008 09:25:31 AM
I made a paper pieced pillow a while back, and I remember it being very tricky, at first. I never thought to cut out the pieces first! I was just using random scraps...and sometimes they didn't lay right after I stitched them on. Cutting the pieces out first would probably help with that.

Thanks for such a clear tutorial!
7599  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Re: Tentacle on: March 29, 2008 08:35:51 PM
It may have been a lot of work, but I think it's worth it! I can think of about 10 other things I'd use it for...and that's just in about 30 seconds of thinking!

Those are fantastic! How did you carve such a detailed image? I'd love to be able to carve something that stunning looking!
