7381  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Re: Cross-Section of a Cloud on: May 01, 2007 05:27:04 PM
I really like this! I like how it uses science stuff (gears, Tesla coil) to "explain" a science idea. Very clever!

I did find gold Glitterspun (at Crafty Planet in Minneapolis, the cutest craft store in the WORLD ... I hope that's not unacceptable advertising -- it's more like unbridled gushing). So I started C3PO last night. I'll post a photo when I finish.
Oooh! I can't wait to see it! How is that yarn to work with?
7383  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Re: Fish Print Zipper Pouch on: May 01, 2007 05:09:29 PM
Thanks, everyone!

It's funny because the yellow zipper drove the decision of which part of the panel to cut- it was the only one they had that matched anything on the panel. And it still leaves me a lot of cool stuff to cut out. Plus, I have a whole intact panel still to play with!

This is really cute! I'm always on the lookout for a cool purse shape to make- I just bought a couple at a thrift store so I can cut them apart for templates.

Did you use 4 "petals" for the bag?

Check this out for mod podge silkscreen info- there's probably more, but I only did a quick search: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=100839.0

And I taught crochet to several kids in my homeroom, including many boys (more boys working on it now than girls, I think- they'd rather crochet and chat instead of doing any silent reading). We're making Snuggle blankets for a local no-kill cat shelter.

And, I'll have to give a thought to bookbinding- maybe I can have them write out a "how-to" for something that they know how to do, and then I can make a bunch of copies of the pages, and then each kid can bind their own copy- each "how-to" will be its own chapter...hmmm...so unds like a plan...thanks for the idea!

But back to wallets! I whipped up 2- one with a page from an old frog calendar and one from a page from an old road atlas. And, after doing the frog one, I realized that if you want a cool picture on the outside, you need to plan how you are going to cut the paper. I think I need to fold one, label it, and unfold it and use it as a placement-planning template. My frog ended up inside the wallet where the bills go  Cry Good thing I picked my least favorite page as a practice one. My camera battery is still charging, so pics will have to wait until tomorrow...
7386  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Re: tetris bookshelves! on: April 30, 2007 03:20:26 PM
do you plan on painting them "tetris" colors?
yeah...i was...and then i thought about also putting colored poster board on the backs of them so the whole block was one color...i just havent gotten around to it...i tend to move onto the next project before i ever fully finish one.

I like the idea of painting them black and then putting color behind them! That would look very cool! I wish I had a spot in my house for something like this!

I always try to bring DIY into the classroom- we tried the mod podge silk screen technique, but I bought the wrong kind of fabric and it was a dismal failure  Cry

I just dug out an old calendar, so I'm going to try to make a wallet out of that. I'll post a pic as soon as my camera battery re-charges!
7388  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / Re: Woven magazine purse on: April 30, 2007 03:15:32 PM
Well, I went and tried joining together two sections of woven paper strips, and was documenting the steps- it isn't hard, but it needs a bit of photo assistance- and I was essentially two steps away from completion when the battery on the camera died. And I was so close!!

I can't even pull off the pics that I have so far...Grrr... Angry

So, as soon as the battery is charged, I'll take a break from whatever it is that I'm working on and I finish the pics and post them, unless someone else posts what you need...

I played the video for a small group of my 8th grade students ("Can you make something just by watching what someone is doing?") and more than half of them were able to get the wallets made. I had several, "This is stupid!" comments and "Why can't we have written directions?" (Answer: Because you guys never read directions, and that isn't the point of the exercise!), but those were from the kids who didn't pay enough attention.

I did pause it after each step to allow them all to carry it out and stay caught up (otherwise they would have been throwing paper, rulers and scissors at me Cheesy ). We used plain paper (actually that greyish brown "math paper" that is pretty close to newsprint) and a few of the kids decorated theirs afterwards and were quite pleased with themselves.

I might make one out of an old magazine page, or the Sunday funnies and bring it in to show them to see if I can convince some of them to try again. Maybe if I tell them I'll post pics of their wallets on the site, they'll be happy!

Thanks for sharing this!

I just got a Paper FX Dream Weaver, which contains a bunch of gadgets for weaving paper strips together (and are supposed to make the job easier). I got it on eBay because I couldn't find it in the US. But, it does have directions for how to make bigger sheets out of smaller sections. I haven't tried it yet, and I have so much on my plate for the next couple of days that I won't get to it until the weekend (unless I miraculously have a chance tonight).

If nobody has an answer posted by then, I can try it and take some pics as I go. I'd scan in the directions, but I don't know if that's allowed.

Hmmmm...the more I type, the more I want to try it now...couldn't hurt to go and test it out right now, I suppose...can you see why the ADD is in my username?
