1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / carepackage for 1st home on: October 13, 2006 12:11:19 AM
my bf is going to be living on his own for the 1st time. he's rented a house and will be moving in on saturday.
i'd love to send him a sort of care package cuz i know he's too excited about moving in that he won't think of some things like um, groceries lol
i'd like to hear ur thoughts about what i'm thinking of gathering up tomorrow and if u have any suggestions that'd be great!!!! (i won't be sending *everything* cuz i don't have that much money, but a few things off the list)

btw he has lived away from home before but he had roommates. so he has some things, mostly just what u'd keep in your bedroom. everything else his roommates already had. oh yah, and he's not really picky (yay!)

-a kleenex box, a roll of tp, and a roll of paper towel
-paper plates/plastic cutlery (not sure when he'll be getting real plates and stuff)
-a calendar
-band-aids
-a deck of cards
-a cheap wall clock
-batteries
-some food. something homemade that can be frozen for later but i haven't decided what. and chocolate chip cookies.

****
-what are some things i could get him to start off his groceries???
-what can i send him to make it more "home-y"
-besides cards, what else can i send so he has something to do?
****

so that's my list so far. any thoughts?
2  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / help with possible future project? on: September 25, 2006 05:13:39 PM
i wasn't sure if this should go in felting or knitting as this kinda pertains to both!
i am interested in making the urban rustic gloves from knitty
( http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter05/PATTurbanrustic.html ) and felting them. what i want to do though, is figure out a way to make a ribbed cuff and attach it after the felting process is done.
here's what i have thought out so far:
1)don't knit the cuff. knit to the beginning of the wrist on each row.
2)when glove is complete, crochet 1 round into the stitches at the wrist.
3)feed cord or something through the crochet loops to hold them open during the felting process. felt.
4)crochet or knit ribbing and attach to the wrist.

i turn to u guys for help cuz although i have done a bit of felting, i haven't done a LOT and i'm not sure how the fiber would behave if i try to keep the crochet loops open.
does this sound like it would work? has anyone tried something like this before?
3  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / yay i'm making my 1st pair of socks! on: September 15, 2006 12:12:51 AM
i haven't been knitting lately (ok it's been about a year or more) because of lack of inspiration / a fear of starting a project and not finishing. but i've been wanting to learn to knit socks for a while now so i decided to take the plunge after i saw knitty's sox on 2 stix!

http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall06/PATTsoxon2stix.html

i'm just excited cuz now that i have an idea of how to make them i think i can do it on dpn's. also, they're small enough that i believe i am actually going to completely finish them!!!
so far i don't have any pics, i'll try to take some tomorrow to show my progress. i've been working on the 1st sock since yesterday and it's almost finished (i just have to sew the seams). i'm hoping i can continue to knit consistently for my 2nd one and not have it turn out a different size lol
i added ribbing on the top of the foot (k3, p3) because stockinette, although fast, gets pretty boring for me after a while.

eta: my sock progress so far.
here's the sock with knitting complete, finishing still to be done (the grey is the waste yarn, i will be removing it lol):

here's a better pic of the neat ribbing on the cuff.
