3  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: Using a Commercial Sewing Pattern on: August 24, 2010 10:50:08 AM
Thank you so, so, SO much for taking the time to put this together for others!!! I have a couple of patterns that I have bought, and never done anything with - I opened them up and immediately put them back into the envelope because looking them over I had no idea what I was doing! Reading this has given me the confidence to try again!

Right off hand, I swear there are no photos of me in any of the dresses (figures, huh...) but I want to post them on the board very soon. Also, I was looking through the spring 08 McCall's patterns and saw this pattern, M5582:

http://img.sewingtoday.com/cat/40000/itm_img/M5582.jpg

The silhouette looks the same, but with just a different bodice and a fabric belt instead of a waistband...I'm definitely going to give this pattern a try!

Sorry to dredge up old posts, but i searched for this pattern bc I have it headed my way in the mail! I was just wondering if anyone had success with either of these (this or the original quoted at the top) and had pics? Thanks!

That is too f-in cute!  The dress, the hair, the SHOES!  The stars on your shoulders - tats or stickers?

tats - freebie done by an apprentice friend of mine. I'm really really wanting to get more to match on the other side. They go over the shoulder and there are two more on the back, successively bigger

Okay so quick background - this is the FIRST thing I have ever sewn that is wearable (or came out normal?) in my life, and I've never been more proud. I'm so bad with sewing machines that I managed to break my mom's twice (she still doesn't know what went wrong, nor has she gotten it fixed) and yet she was kind enough to buy me my own for Christmas about 2 years ago. It sat unused and unloved on the shelf for the last year and a half (I get distracted easily - it was kept company by the other 219073 crafts that are half/started finished). Buuut anyway, I digress...

I used Lamby's tutorial : http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=77268.0
and I learned countless things as I went (such as, zippers are the devil. okay maybe not that bad, but still..) and also, if you're going to allow for seam allowances, freakin use 'em!!! And added a few minor adjustments for my sudden huge boobs that have sprouted from nowhere.. But it still turned out great.
And I have to thank my irish love for putting up with my hissy fits when things weren't going right, and the lady upstairs (who I think hates me already) for when I had the really bad hissy fit and screamed... but that's beside the point.
I started to make this for practice, and then decided that the pink in the dots matched my favorite shoes (that I never get to wear) PERFECTLY. Also, I was about a week away from my 22nd birthday, and I needed something to wear that was going to be fabulous since we were going out on the town [and to see the Dark Knight! omg it was sweet] and it was required that everyone dress up! So I finished it in the knick of time (with help for 2 of FOUR darts I had to put in the darn thing! but even she was impressed Cheesy ).
*whew, i talk forever, my bad!*
HERE IT IS!

a bit closer, to see how perfectly it fit! *squeee!*
