21  Two Great Summer Salad Recipes in Vegetarian / Vegan by HSG on: July 12, 2015 10:52:24 AM
Found these two salad recipes and tried them both yesterday. So yummy! Both are vegan, healthy and super easy.
First up is my favorite.
Roasted Yam and Kale Salad
2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 inch chunks
2 T. olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
1 T. olive oil
1 medium onion, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 bunch of kale, washed, ribs removed and chopped into bite size pieces
2 T. red wine vinegar
1 tsp. thyme
Preheat oven to 400. Put sweet potatoes into a gallon zipper bag with 2 T.olive oil, and shake. Salt and pepper to taste. Place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for 25 minutes.

Heat 1 T. olive oil with garlic and onion. Caramelize onions, about 15 minutes. After onions are caramelized, turn off heat and add kale to pan with lid on. Leave for only about 8 minutes. Just to slightly tender and brighten in color. Refrigerate till ready to serve. Mix vinegar and thyme toss over salad, EAT!

This salad is so delicious and with so few ingredients you will be surprised.

Second is another easy but crazy good salad.
Curried Quinoa Salad
1 cup quinoa
1 tsp. curry powder
1 carrot, grated
1/4 cup of dried cranberries
1 can chickpeas, washed and drained
thin sliced 1/4 purple onion
salt and pepper to taste
Cook quinoa according to package, but add curry before cooking. Once cooked remove from pot to cool in bowl. Add carrot, cranberries, onion and chickpeas. Salad and pepper to taste, EAT!

Eating healthy is easy when the food is this good. Enjoy! Smiley

Been along time since this craftalong had any love, so I made a wreath to leave. Since July 4th is this weekend I combined the two. Smiley

It's one of the wreath made with tulle wrapped around a pool noodle. Super easy and fun.

24  Making Mayonnaise in Recipes and Cooking Tips by HSG on: May 15, 2015 08:09:31 AM
Got this great and easy recipe for making mayonnaise from a friend. It takes about 2 - 4 minutes from start to finish.
Ingredients:
2 eggs
3/4 tsp. salt
1 T. vinegar
2 cups of oil

Take your first 3 ingredients, and put them into a food processor with the large steel 'S' blade. Process for 30 seconds. With processor going, slowly poor oil into feed tube in a steady stream. When oil is all gone process for about another 5 seconds, and you're done!

You will have 2 1/2 cups rich creamy mayonnaise with no sugar, preservatives, or anything you cannot pronounce. It will last 2 weeks in your fridge in a closed container.

The cost of a jar of mayonnaise in my area is about $4.00 - 6.00 dollars. This costs about .45 cents to make.  Smiley

26  Library Card Catalog Restoration in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by HSG on: May 04, 2015 06:05:52 PM
Friend asked me if I could restore an old card catalog. He wanted to surprise his wife, and dear friend, for her birthday. Although I've never done a restoration on this scale, I was excited to give it a go.

It is a Remington Rand card catalog that he found on Craigslist. The person who had it, had painted it this  red, white and blue.

Once stripped, the wood must have been very dry when they painted. You can see the white paint had soaked into the wood. You can also see there was a change in the hardware from the drawer fronts, where they used wood putty.

All stripped and sanded, then did some conditioning to the wood before staining.

Because there was hardware missing I found some similar brass pieces to use on Etsy. Then I started putting it all back together.

Though the cabinet has flaws in the wood from neglect, paint and whatever, it is still a beautiful piece of history. I really enjoyed doing this project for my friend.
Finished!

Even found some old library cards to use in one of the drawers.

This took me a total of about 15 hours to complete. I would like to tackle something similar again sometime. Thanks for checking it out Smiley

I received from Onyxnox, and I am in love with this chunky block with Puffins Smiley It is painted and has drawings with paper and canvas. Such a work of art.

I adore this Puffin block, and have it next to my desk. She truly captured the expression the Puffin has and its walk/waddle.  Cheesy

Thank you Onyxnox! Hope you post this project in the regular forums so everyone can see it. Smiley

29  Re: Wrap and rust dyeing - my first time ever... in Dyeing: Completed Projects by HSG on: November 14, 2014 11:19:11 AM
There's this artist I follow on Flickr, and she does rust, concrete and other types of unique art. Here is one of my favorites by her:
light bulb - wire and rust on canvas by Sharon Pazner, on Flickr

I've often wondered how it was done, and the fabric type, etc.
