661  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / Twirly Skirt Sun Dress on: July 09, 2007 04:39:45 PM
Inspired by a combo-skirt dress I saw in a catalog, I taught myself a few new things and "unvented" this Sun Dress That Converts to a Skirt ... It is basically three tiered skirt stretched into a shired tube top with straps (elastic in casing). She can also tuck in the straps and wear it around her waist as a longer twirly skirt -- 2 skirts in one!

Easy peasy, tho gathering can be hard on the sleep deprived ma of little ones.

Here is my little she ... in a celebratory run around her room:

And here it is just laid out ... After I made this one, I made three more and it was the better part of her spring wardrobe. Most are now a bit threadbare, paint, mud and other faint prints of being a wee 3YO!

Whadya think?

Let me join the choir! What stunning dresses and what fine models! My daughter  prefers comfort to fancy as well ... and sentiment, she likes to wear comfy clothes that remind her of whatever her most intense passion is that week, day, hour ...

I think I am especially drawn to the Asian style ones. I am so new to sewing and haven't tried sewing with anything but plain cotton ... but perhaps a bit of something stretchy? Hmmm?

Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing!

aw shucks! yeah. I made the skirt too. It is a strip skirt -- she and I chose the fabric together. She calls it her "Richard of York" skirt ... you know the mnemonic for rainbow ... 'Richard of York gave battle in vain?" That's the one. I used fabric scraps for hers but now a few friends want some and so I had to search for more ... it's her current favorite and so getting a little threadbare.

i do have fun indulging her obsessions and I love going to the store and hearing her say "Mommy can we make one of those?"

My darling daughter just fell for Ki ki the Delivery Witch and so I wondered ... could I make her a little Ji Ji applique? I could. Zillions of errors later here it is. i tired to use fuseable web but botched up so it is a little fused and a little sewn. Cat is made with wool rayon blend felt scraps.

You can see it here:
