1  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / vegan: 21st birthday cake (elderflower and golden syrup) & rainbow cupcakes too on: August 13, 2008 04:38:04 AM
hey everyone,
yesterday was my 21st birthday  Grin so for a meal out with friends i made elderflower and golden syrup cake (deliciousssssss) which is vegan, but then i decorated it with buttercream icing, which sadly i didn't use soy butter for since we didn't have any at home and i didn't have time to run out and buy any! but the cake is vegan...
anyway, onto the picture

and here's the recipe for the sponge

1lb self-raising flour
4 dessert spoons goldern syrup
1tsp bi-carb
7oz sugar
8floz/200ml sunflower oil
250ml elderflower cordial
250ml apple juice

1. sieve flour and mix dry ingredients
2. add wet ingredients gradually and mix well
3. pour into lined tin, place in oven for 40minutes at gas mark 4.
4. tada! your cake is ready.

and here is a picture of rainbow cupcakes i made for my friend gracie's 21st, because she lovvvves the rainbow
2  COOKING / Dessert / owl fairy cakes on: July 31, 2008 02:38:03 PM
PentacleSeven's "i don't give a hoot" cupcakes http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=258394.0 really struck a chord in me, since i too love owls, so for a girly "wine and pizza" night (which descended into junk food heaven) yesterday i decided to whip up a batch.

however i don't have easy access to oeros  Sad so improvised with piping butter icing in different ways.

here are all my little owlets

and a close up

and me about to enjoy one!

whaddya think?

3  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / birdish duck mobile for friend's 21st birthday on: July 19, 2008 01:58:33 AM
hello everyone,

if there is a better forum for this post then do feel free to move it.

it's one of my best friend's 21st birthday today and she adores ducks. well i decided to make her a duck mobile, only it turned out that the ducks are more generic bird-like. oh well, i still find them cute, she'll understand.
in fact, i secretly want to keep it and hang it from my wardrobe doorhandle, but shhhh.

here it is laid out on my bed

all materials are recycled, and mainly from freecycle woop i love freecycle!

4  COOKING / Dessert / HEART cake for sister's birthday! on: July 19, 2008 01:31:56 AM
i am so very proud of this cake since so much love went into it that i wanted to share it with all you good good people.

it is a classic victoria sponge but instead of jam&buttercream icing it has chopped strawberries and piped whipped cream inside, and to decorate too.

and i found the candles from paperchase, my sister loves hearts so they just screamed out at me "buy meeeee"!

without further ado:

side view

top view, yes that's a cream heart filled with strawberries!

here she is, making wishes!

it tasted gooood.

7  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / my Parisian man's painting. i call it "dead mermaid" on: January 18, 2008 04:37:20 AM
hey everyone.
my boyfriend, Cedric Charleuf, is an artist out here in Paris, and i love this painting so much that i had to show you all. sadly my camera is a bit ancient so the pictures don't really do it justice but you do get the general gist of the colours/richness/sadness of the work. right, enough waffling.

i'd love to hear your thoughts

8  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / owly gloves, classy gloves and some goosey ribbon on: December 19, 2007 01:06:32 AM
hello all.

a recent move to paris ( ! ) has meant that i haven't been crafting much lately, it's all been a bit hectic. however i have been getting off my bum in the past few weeks because of christmas!!

firstly here are some owly gloves that i made for myself since it's so cold here. the finger parts look funny and wavy when they are not on my hands!

i love them so very much.

on a recent trip home i showed them to my mum, who adored them too, and requested some ruthietuesday gloves for herself. being a classy lady i got some classier limey green gloves for her, turquoise embroidery thread and bright pink swarovski beads - sadly the colours are quite washed out in these pictures, i'm not a technolowizard,  so you'll just have to imagine the prettyness : )

this one is quite dark but you can see the length
http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n222/thecalmwithin/?action=view&current=PIC_0001-2.jpg
this one is a bit lighter (still washed out! imagine warmer tones people)
http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n222/thecalmwithin/?action=view&current=PIC_0005-1.jpg
and here for detail - the idea is that the swoopey scrolls meet each other at the wrist, i.e. continue from one glove to the other.

i found some adorable swiss style goosey ribbon/trim, and as a gift for my eldest sister i have attached it to the front of a fitted black cardigan i think she'll swoon over (she loves fitted black).

from afar

and the trim up close (so cute!)

that's all for now. merry xmas everyone!

peace,

10  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / crafting - trying to decorate an ethical festival on: April 11, 2007 01:55:05 PM
(i've moved this from another thread, was in the wrong place before&i was told to put it here, sorry)

hey there everyone,
I am involvd in trying to decorate Valefest [http://www.myspace.com/festivale] which is a student run one-day festival (students from the University of Birmingham, England), now in its third year, which givs 100% of the money it raises to charity - this year we have chosen ActionAid and a grassroots charity which will help out in Darfur (maybe KidsforKids but we aren't sure yet).
The festival will have 4 different music stages but it isn't purely musically orientated, there will be lots of stalls, societies, workshops (for instance African drumming) etc etc.

Anywayyy, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a lot of material donated to us, the Decorations Committee. We need to make flags, giant cushions and beanbags, decorate the fence by any means possible, decorate our stages/tents.  The ethos of the festival is to be as green as possible, so we want to reuse and recycle materials, rather than the fabric being thrown out and ending up in a landfill otherwise.

Any responses would be lovely!
Peace,
Ruth
