I have seen a few rounds of this come and go, and I figured I should jump in and get another round rolling. So here we are, a few minor edits from the last rounds, but pretty much the same thing. So lets get pumped for the new year with some inspirational prayer flags!!

For those who dont know, the concept is simple: decorate a rectangle of fabric or other material with words and/or images that convey a personal prayer. It can be all fabric, or a mixed-media piece, it's up to you. They all get strung up together and hung as a reminder of inspiration and prayers. The details of size and how to make them are below.

These will be small and easy to mail in an envelope. One difference from previous rounds is everyone will have multiple partners. Depending on how many people sign up, I will make groups of 4 to 6. Each person will get a word pulled from the surveys and make one flag for each group member themed on that word. In the survey, everyone will make a list of words. I will assign words in one of two ways. If all the group members are pretty like-minded in the words they chose, I will give each partner one word to put on every flag. If there is a really big variety (one person is focused on minimalist ideas, another on weight loss), I will give each person a specific word for each partner. There will be about a week of crafting time per flag, so everyone should have enough time either way.

Because this is a group swap, this is a NO EXTRAS SWAP. With so many partners, I would hate for someone to get unintentionally guilted into sending an extra if the rest of the group is on board and they are not. If you really love sending extras, go for it, but do not expect any in return.

Send out is Monday February 23. This will give everyone five weeks to get all the flags created. If you have any issues or delays, PLEASE communicate with me and all your partners right away. I dont want to have to give anyone negative feedback.

There is a cool blog called Prayer Flag Project that is dedicated to these flags where you can read more on the topic. The original idea is that the prayer flag is hung outdoors to slowly deteriorate and release your prayer into the world.  With that in mind, you can see that it is not expected to be a masterpiece of perfect stitching.  Rather, it is an art piece that is thoughtfully and prayerfully made.

Click Here for the galleries from rounds one, two, three and four.

We will use the article about them in Cloth Paper Scissors as our guide; the instructions below are taken from that link:

How to Make Prayer Flags

1. Cut pieces of fabric to 5" x 11". Use materials you already have on hand.
2. Fold the top down on each piece of fabric and stitch in place to create a 3" sleeve, making the flag surface 5" x 8".
3. Paint, stitch, embroider, appliqu, or collage the flags.
4. Add words, journaling, or symbols as desired. You can appliqu letters, add hand stitching, stencil with textile paint, or just write with a permanent marker.
5. Thread the flags onto a string or cord and hang them outdoors so the breeze will catch them and spread your intentions.

Details of swap:
--You will craft ONE prayer flag for each group member (yourself included), keeping your partners preferences in mind.  Extras are NOT allowed.  If you and your partner want to send anything other than the prayer flag, please do not post pictures of those items in the swap thread (but you may post pictures in the personal swap gallery, if you like.)
-- Because this swap involves multiple packages and partners, you must have successfully completed two swaps already.
--You will have a month of craft time, with the send out date being Monday, February 23.
-- Please post in this thread (or the gallery thread) at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.

*PLEASE READ THIS!*
- No one like to be flaked on, so if you aren't sure if you can do this swap, don't sign up.
- You must get delivery confirmation if sending within the U.S., or a mailing receipt if sending elsewhere.
- If you must send late, let the organizers and your partner know ASAP.
- Good communication is very important. Please stay in touch by posting weekly in the swap thread.
- PM both organizers and your partners when you send and when you receive.
- Please post photos of the package you receive in the gallery, and take pictures of what you make before you send it.
- HAVE FUN!

4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / New Year, new prayer flags on: November 16, 2014 01:30:08 PM
So I know everyone is tied up with Christmas, but I am already thinking about the New Year! I keep seeing all these awesome prayer flags, but I don't have any and feel like they could really add to my creative space.

So, would anyone else be interested in a swap of prayer flags, possibly themed around resolutions or inspiration? I was thinking group-style...maybe 4-6 people to a group, everyone makes one for everyone else. Who is on board?

Details of swap:
This is meant to be a low-stress swap centered around our common love of craft books. And of course there will be some light crafting! You will be required to send;
1. A craft book that fits your partners requests.
2. A supply or supplies related to the crafts in the book equal to a medium ($10-30)
3. One medium or two small crafted items. These do not have to be related to the craft book. (a medium is 2-3 hours of crafting and a small is less than 2 hours of crafting)

You do not have to go out and buy a brand new book to participate in this swap. In fact, I encourage you to share a book you have loved and want to share. If you do send used, please make sure it is in wonderful and complete condition. If the book came with patterns, cds or other extras that are needed to complete projects, they must be included. Essentially, you need to ask your self Would I be THRILLED to get this?.

For the sake of this swap, art and cookbooks are includedCraftster has art and cooking boards, so it seems appropriate. As long as a book is DIY, its in. After some consideration on my part, I am going to say magazines are out.

The supply and craft parts are pretty self-explanatory. Make sure the supplies are related to the book. The craft can be related or not, just make sure it fits your partner.

As I am partnering, I have go regular partners or round robin. If it is round robin, please no extrasthis will ensure no-one feels shortchanged or like they didnt do enough.

Since there is a month of crafting time, you will need to post in the original board twice after partners are assigned. A simple Im here will suffice. Alternatively, I will be posting a fun question you can answer instead. The first check-in is due by 10/16 and the second by Halloween.

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:

7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Craft book swap! on: September 15, 2010 04:31:12 PM
Okay, here's the idea...I want to create a swap that is low-stress but still super fun. I know we all have a list of books we want about a mile long as well as some we are done with. So here's what I am thinking....

In order to swap, you must have one of these;
1. A wist with books on it
2. An Amazon or similar wishlist
3. A readiness to recieve any random book

Each person would send a package with;
1. One new or used (in good and complete condition) craft book the reciever wants
2. Craft supply/supplies related to the projects in the book, equal to a medium
3. One medium or two small crafted based on partner's likes

In the survey, I would have a space for "top five books you want" as well as "books you have and want to pass on". Hopefully, I could find some matches and pair people up accordingly. My thoughts on timeframe is give everyone one month to get the package ready. That way, it is low pressure and gives people time in case they buy a book online. Also, I would definately organize it. So give me some feedback!
8  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Baby mittens and armwarmers on: December 06, 2009 08:57:50 AM
Well, since I am having a winter baby, I decided to make mittens! And my brilliant husband said, You know what would be cool? Little arm warmers! So after making the mittens, I altered the pattern for arm warmers. Here they are in all their warm, stripey glory!

And an extra shot of the arm warmers because, really, they are sooo cool!

I know I got the mitten pattern off the internet somewhere. I think it was off crochetpatterncentral.com. If I ever re-find the actual link, I will add it to this post.
9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / inchies as shower activity??? on: May 11, 2009 03:38:57 PM
First, short background. I am not super girly, and have tons of male friends, so I am already set for a very non-traditional, co-ed baby shower. So instead of the usual games (that I hate, hate, hate) I wanted to have some sort of craft/activity. My family and friends run the gamut from uber-crafty to can't-operate-gluestick. So onsie decorating would be way too much for many of them, even with paint pens. Oh, and there will be small kids around. And knowing my friends, it will be a very casual, come when you can, eat when you want type thing.

For those of you unfamiliar, inchies consist of taking a 1" square piece of paper or heavy card an decorating it. I was considering making them 2" to be a bit easier on everyone. I envision a table with pre-cut inchies, glue, paper scraps, drawing tools and stickers. Nothing crazy, just enough for everyone to decorate a bit. I would have information on the table as well as some "examples" so I am not stuck explaining it a billion times. In the end, I would arrange and glue them all together as art for the nursury.

So the question is, am I insane? Or is this a good idea?
10  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Question for moms who crafted during pregnancy on: January 10, 2009 12:28:04 PM
So my husband and I are in baby mode. Of course one of the first things on my mind is "I'm gonna make bibs and a blanket and stuffies and a diaper bag and a mobile and bedding and refinish a crib and and and..." Lucky for me, I already know this is insane.

Question for all you ladies is...how did you decide what you were going make and what you were going to skip? And what projects did you find most irritating or frustrating? Like is trying to crochet with a giant belly a big pain?

I do have 3 grandmothers who will probably all make blankets, and a mom who will sew whatever she wants. I also plan on staying at work full time as long as possible. I just figure if I weed out the list now, I can make a few things really well and buy the rest on Etsy.

Thanks for the input ladies!
