I recently found Amvets in Escondido, which is pretty large and has a ton of stuff (I love their camera case!) - but a friend said that the Oceanside one is better... which made me start wondering about the other Amvets in SD. I know there's one in downtown - are there any others?

How expensive are the thrift stores in Encinitas & the coast? My friend said they're pricey but I dunno - can anyone tell me? Like clothes, cameras, housewares and etc?
2  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: Slide Lamps... i know they've been done PICS! on: August 05, 2005 02:36:21 AM
Great job! I've always wanted to make one after seeing the Readymade one - even the first one here on craftster a year ago or so. But I could never do that to my beautiful slides from college - your idea of buying them off ebay is a beautiful idea - or I could simply just shoot some random rolls.

Curious though, what lamp did you use and where did you get it? I'm way too cheap to buy anything too much, so perhaps I should start poking around at thrift stores for lamps, but they're starting to charge so much for furniture that I'd be better off looking at a garage sale.... but I'm not die-hard enough to drive all over the place for garage sales. Ok new question :-

I want to make band tshirts.

I do not plan to use the band's logo, or even the font used to write it's name.

I do not plan to use any photo's of the band, or any artwork, in other words, the only thing that resembles the band is its name written in my own writing.

I am going to state that it is all unofficial.

I'm going to be operating very small scale - only 2 or 3 a month.

Is this still going against trademark rules?

I have emailed the bands asking for permission, but as of yet, none are to reply.. lol, so I'm writing this to find out if it is actually ok to go ahead.

I've been poking around wondering the same thing. I wish to make and sell band shirts/clothing/apparel, but I do not plan on using the band's logo, images, or the font they use. It will all be original - drawn and created by me. Like Freaky, I will be stating it's my own creation - unofficial, and no two articles will be alike and it will not be imitating anything that the band already uses for designs.

All I've gotten is that it's illegal if the band name (or lyrics) are trademarked. How do you find out if the band name or lyrics are trademarked? Would it be on their site?

I just want to make unique clothing (not just tshirts) with the band name (not logo or font) and lyrics and my own drawings/photographs (not specifically OF the band).

That Thriftown on Stockton is what I was talking about earlier. They have a good shoe selection, and everthing is well organized.

I second Thrifttown on Stockton - I always visited that one - as well as Sac's of Fruitridge. I also used to frequent the thrift store "strip" on Franklin (Desert Industries & Goodwill were the better two) and there are a few store on Fair Oaks like Sac's of Carmichael on Fair Oaks & Marconi.

There's already a thread for Sacramento thrift stores here:

kang knows it's a thirft post that urges me to register.  Roll Eyes

I'm in north county, on the inland/costal borderline.  Since I moved in last fall, I've mostly been working from this list for thrift stores... nice to see some more.

If any of you are into beading/jewlery making, the Indian Store in Escondido has an excellent selection of beads. Lots of glass and semi-precious stones.

What's this rage about Dollar Tree?

I've been working off that list as well... but I'm sure there are a ton that aren't listed on there.

As for Dollar Tree, everything there is a dollar, so it's great for cleaning supplies and such.

thanks for the input guys, but i was was hoping for something more untraditional. shots of their details are very common now-a-days along with photo cards and what not. it would be cool if it was photo-related, but it really doesn't have to. i thought up last night something like a packet of seeds (for their new marriage) with the envelope with their photo on it or something. Or you can make a bag for his surboard.. find out the size of his board first.

They're just looong drawstring bags with the end being nylon for the nose. The fabric for the actual board should be soft so it won't scratch the board. They're mostly terrycloth.

Or you can make him a custom towel.

Or you can get him a surf kit
Sex wax, headhunter's sunscreen, towel, sandals, shorts, wetsuit repair, solaris (for surfboard repair), and a bag to carry as a backpack to put it all in.

(my boyfriend's a surfer too. Smiley)

hope that helps!
9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / "Thank You" photo gifts? on: July 08, 2005 01:02:21 AM
I'm a wedding photographer, and I barely focus any of my energy on marketing anymore, and I was thinking that I would like to give my clients some sort of "thank you" gift after the wedding. I don't want to give thank you cards with their photo on them, really (it's overdone)... I'm looking for something more unique and different.

Any ideas? I'm up for anything!
