1  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 66 ENTRIES / Creek-inspired storage box on: September 08, 2011 09:47:47 AM
I was working on a rock swap when this challenge was announced, and already had the idea to do this project. My favorite thing to do on a summer day is wander along and through a creek. My partner is from Florida, where apparently they don't have creeks like ours: covered with pebbles and shallow and wading-friendly, and not full of alligators.  Cheesy
I made her this box, inspired by splashing around in a cool stream on a hot day:

I had initially planned to paint the sides, but decided I preferred a light stain:

The circles on the top were meant to emulate the ripples you get when you drop a stone in water:

It has scrapbook paper of a rocky stream inside:

I was so pleased with the results! Absolutely worth every brain cell I killed with superglue fumes.  Cheesy
It was very hard to give away, but I think jeannettew32 loved it, so I'm happy to know it's being appreciated in its new home.
2  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Love Every Body / Body acceptance / HAES swap? on: August 31, 2011 03:36:09 PM
Is anyone else practicing HAES (Health At Every Size)? I've been easing into it all summer, along with doing a lot of other self-care, and love everything about it. I've also become a lot more aware of the steady stream of body hate that we wade through every day. Regardless of what our bodies actually look like (and completely overlooking the fact that they are these miraculous instruments!), there is always somebody telling us they're not good enough. Grr.

There have been a few pretty awesome plus-size swaps here on Craftster, but I'd love to have one open to loving on ALL body types. With the focus being positive, focusing on the worth and inherent beauty in everyone, regardless of their appearance. Would anyone else be interested?

Details of swap:
Paper, ephemera, papercrafting tools, charms, scraps, doodads we want it all, right? Anything you can reasonably use for papercrafting (within your partners wants) is fair game for this swap!

There are a few options with this swap:

Option 1. You and your partner each send the other a regular, business-sized envelope full of papercrafting goodies. (A business-sized envelope is 4 1/8 by 9 1/ 2 inches- FYI.)

Option 2. You and your partner each send the other a standard (9x12) manila envelope full of papercrafting goodies.

Option 3 Givers and Needers Option. If you have a lot of papercrafting items to share and would like to destash, you may want to be a Giver. If you want to get into papercrafting, but cant afford or find supplies, you may want to be a Needer. Each Giver will fill a 9x12 envelope with assorted papercrafting supplies and send this to their partnered Needer. In exchange, their partnered Needer will craft one small papercrafting item and send it to their Giver. (These items do not have to be made of the received supplies.)
***Please note: If you choose to be a Giver, you must give some description of what sort of papercrafting supplies you have to offer. If you choose to be a Needer, you have one extra week to send out your crafted items. If I have an uneven number of Givers and Needers, I will PM the last person(s) to sign up to see if you wish to choose one of the other two options.

You must at least fill the agreed-upon size of envelope, but you are welcome to send more if you like. Just discuss what you plan to send with your partner, so no one feels like they didn't send enough. Smiley
*****
If this is your first swap, you may choose one option/partner.
If you have completed one or more swaps, you may choose to have two partners, in any combination of the three options.

Stones, rocks, crystals, minerals, fossils yay!

Are you a stone fanatic? Do you come home from, well, everywhere with a rock or two in your pocket? Do you have to cut short hikes and creekwalks because you can't carry anymore? Will no one help you move anymore because you have "too many effing rocks"? Or has someone ever helped you move (just once, the sucker) and asked "What is this, a box of rocks?" and you had to grin because of course it was?

Well, my friends, I have a solution for you: GET MORE ROCKS! (Oh please, did you think I would tell you to get rid of them?) (Hmmm... on second thought, you should send them to me!  Grin) Clearly the most sensible course of action is to swap stones and stone crafts with your fellow Craftster rockhounds.

Details of swap:
Well be sending two crafted items relating to rocks. One crafted item must be time-consuming (in the medium-large range), while the second item is something simpler (small). I'm not crazy about the point or size categories, but please make nice things that you would like to receive. Smiley

Some ideas for rock crafts: painted or crocheted stones, display boxes, small bags for storage, shoulder bags or aprons for rock collecting, jewelry made with stone beads or rocks, windchimes, stone mosaics, papercrafts with pictures of stones, etc.

In addition to the crafts, you must send one stone to your partner.

Do you have favorite rocks/crystals/etc?

Are there specific kinds of stones that you would like to receive?

What sorts of rock-related crafts would you like to receive? (If you are looking for jewelry or clothing, please make sure to let your partner know what sizes you prefer.)

Are there any particular stones or crafts that you would not like to receive?

Do you have access to a particular type of stone? (Maybe its common in your area)

What kinds of crafts do you make / would you like to make for this swap?

Tell your partner a little about how you collect rocks. Do you use crystals for healing, etc? Do you dig rocks out of the ground and crack them open? Do you purchase polished specimens for display? This should give your partner ideas about what sorts of things you would like... don't worry, all rocking is cool, we won't judge. Smiley

Details of swap:
Have you ever wondered how much you can fit in an envelope and still pay only letter postage for it to be mailed to its destination?  Well, credit for this brilliant swap idea goes to lovesclutter! But this time, we're going to open the swap for our international Craftster friends!

In this swap, you have one week to fill an envelope with random craft-related and/or crafted goodies from your personal craft stash and mail it to your partner(s).  Some possibilities for items to send are embroidery floss, small earrings, bookmarks, mini crocheted/tatted/woven/knitted things, inchies, ATCs, beads, appliqus, fabric scraps, ephemera, sequins, etc.  Get creative!
Within the US, these are the guidelines for a first-class letter (44-cents){per the USPS website}:
First-Class letter dimensions:

Size limits:
- Rectangular; length is the dimension parallel to the address.
- At least 3-1/2 inches high by 5 inches long by 0.007 inch thick
- No more than 6-1/8 inches high by 11-1/2 inches long by 1/4 inch thick
- Up to 3.5 ounces
- Surcharge will apply for nonmachinable letter

For first class mail, the weight must not be over 1 ounce to qualify for the $0.44 postage fee (caution: if you go over the 1 ounce limit, it will cost you $0.61 for an envelope which weighs up to 2 ounces). International first class has the same size restirctions, but prices begin at $0.80-$0.98.

Therefore, to qualify for the first-class letter fee, the key here would be to keep it more or less flat (so that it will be machinable) and to make sure it weighs no more than an oz (gotta love those digital scales!).

Since this swap requires little or no crafting time, you have the option of signing up for either 1 or 2 partners!

The Fine Print:
1. Good communication is very important!  It is your responsibility to inform your partner(s) and the organizers when you send/receive your envelopes.
2. Although this is a random swap, the general rule of thumb is to send out things which you would love to receive.
3. No DCNs will be required for this swap (because the envelopes do not qualify for DCNs), but you must agree to resend to your partner(s) if the envelope(s) go missing (for whatever reasons).
4. Everyone who signs up for the swap must post in this thread!

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer (that's me- Dragonflower!:

10  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / How early/long should I post in new swap ideas? on: June 29, 2011 07:35:59 AM
I'm organizing a swap in July (Stone swap- come play!  Wink), and I've had the idea posted in the new swap ideas board for about a month. I have an idea for another swap, but it will be at least 2 months before I'll be ready to get started on that one (and maybe longer). I've seen a few ideas on that board which had a lot of interest, but the swap never happened, and I know that after something has been discussed for several weeks with no set date decided I start to lose interest because I figure it will never happen.
So anyway, how long before I plan to actually start a swap should I start a discussion thread about it? How long can the idea thread go on before you lose interest? I'd like to have the idea floating around long enough to peak swappers' interest, but not keep it going so long that they get bored. Smiley
