1  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Question about pressing small edges on: April 11, 2007 01:34:58 PM
Hi Craftsters,

I am a very new and self-taught sewer (seamstress?) and I have a question about the easiest project in Lotta Jansdotter's new book, Simple Sewing. The pattern is for napkins but she gives instructions for making coasters in the same pattern.

I am working on pressing the edges in 1/4 inch and I keep burning myself with the iron. I never did a seam like this and I think maybe I am using the wrong tools. Is there an easier way to press these tiny creases? Is there some tool for this that I am missing? Am I just a klutz?

After I finish the coasters I plan on making the backpack from the same book, and the pattern uses the same technique. If there's some easier way to press these small creases I would love to know it because I'm sure I'll be using this technique a lot!

Thanks (in advance) for the help.

Yours Truly,
Burnt Fingers in Phoenix

3  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Holding Two Strands Together: Looking for a chart on: October 07, 2005 07:58:01 PM
Hi Craftsters!

I am looking for a chart that will tell me what gauge I will get if I hold two strands of a certain weight yarn together. For example: 2 strands of DK weight yarn equals ____ weight. Or, 2 strands of yarn that gets 20 stitches to the inch will give a gauge of _____ stitches per inch.

Has anyone seen a comprehensive list like this?

Thanks in advance!
4  New York / New York: NYC and Long Island / Knitting: Bryspun Circs in NYC??? on: June 06, 2005 11:12:30 AM
Hello all!

I am looking to buy some of those new Bryspun Circular Needles while I am here in NYC for the summer. There is a great review of them here: http://www.grumperina.com/knitblog/archives/2005/06/how_knotty_are.htm

Has anyone seen them in your yarny travels? Thanks!
5  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Projects from "Loop-d-Loop" on: May 20, 2005 07:46:19 PM
With so much buzz going on about Teva Durham's new book, I thought I'd start a thread. Here is my modified steek tank:

I used Sesia Bilbao (there's a picture of it here: http://photos1.blogger.com/img/190/1072/640/IMG_1142.JPG.jpg) which is a cotton tape yarn. I held two strands together to get gauge. I sort of made a metamorphosis of the ballet tee and the steek tank. I'll get a picture of myself wearing it sometime this weekend.

I already finished the knitting of the Ibiza Shirt, and I just have to seam and weave in ends.  My next project is going to be the ruffle scarf made with Noro Kochoran. Can you tell I'm obsessed with this book?

Has anyone finished any Loop-d-Loop projects?
6  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Anybody know anything about Singer Graduate? on: May 19, 2005 12:20:01 PM
Hello craftsters!

Quick Question: I just got a Singer Graduate II Model 724 sewing machine. I can tell it's old because the whole thing is made of metal. I want to use it to make bags and line knitted items. Does anyone know ANYTHING at all about this machine? I have never owned or even used a sewing machine before, and I am completely stumped. If anyone can help me I will be VERY appreciative.

8  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / felting with a mohair blend??? on: July 14, 2004 11:35:45 AM
Hi there!

I have some mohair that is 72% mohair, 20% wool, and 8% viscose. I would love to make something felted out of it. Just wondering if anyone ever felted with this before. I know viscose is not an animal fiber, but I read in "knit one felt too" that you could use a blend if the nonanimal fiber was a small percentage.

I guess I could knit a swatch but i wanted to get some input first  Wink

Thanks!!

9  KNITTING / Projects from the Stitch 'N B**ch Books by Debbie Stoller / Hat from Stitch n Bitch on: June 07, 2004 11:29:12 AM
This is my first hat project ever! I did it exactly like the pattern said for size small and it fit perfect! It was really easy too. I changed the colors because this was all i had. That's me modeling it  Wink

10  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / My first duct tape purse! on: June 07, 2004 11:23:43 AM
This is the first duct tape purse i ever made! I used black duct tape for the whole thing from Ace Hardware and Plastic Packing Tape also from Ace Hardware. The pictures came from a Jewish Calendar. One side is supposed to be a picture of Israel (i think) and the other side is a celebration of the Jewish holiday Sukkot. I am very excited about this. Please give me feedback so i can improve my next one!

Illanna
