1  my peaceful forest... in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by thriftjunkie on: September 08, 2009 07:36:40 PM
so i haven't posted on craftster for over a year. but i just moved into a new house that i'll be in for an extended period of time (first time in 5 years!) and so i decided to really put some effort into decoration.

i got my first set of furniture that wasn't hand-me-down (ikea!). also, i saw the most amazing tree wall decals on ebay, but wasn't feeling the $80 price tag. so i bought some black contact paper and made my own! this is what i came up with:

2  gizmo the revolutionary in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by thriftjunkie on: March 19, 2008 08:24:45 PM
my favorite little guy in the world is gizmo (AKA le oui), the rat terrier. like most terriers, he has a big dog complex. we joke that he would like nothing more to incite a revolution. in fact, his middle name is either coup de etat or bonaparte, depending on his mood. i was inspired by the website "obey the pure breed" (http://www.obeythepurebreed.com) to make this propaganda poster in photoshop for his owner. this is my first photoshop illustration! the only thing i didn't do is the swirly stuff at the bottom.

he lives in brooklyn, where there are lots of pigeons- we joke that he calls them his "avian allies"- so of course i had to include them in here. and i think he looks rather handsome in his beret!

3  3 new portraits: african children (UPDATE: info about children added) in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by thriftjunkie on: March 08, 2008 04:10:47 PM
i was asked to draw some portraits for a charity that supports heath care in africa, so i decided to draw three 4-6 year old african girls.

these were drawn with black and white colored pencils on gray paper. i used a black pigment liner to add highlights.

Gugu (the girl without face paint), Anele (the girl with beaded necklaces), and Ntando (the girl with whiskered face paint) live in a Zulu village near St. Lucia, in South Africa. This area is heavily affected by HIV/AIDS, so many young children in this village have lost one or both parents and are in desperate need of care. These three girls attend a free day care center that was established in order to meet the basic needs of children aged one to five. In these drawings, the girls are waiting to participate in the day care centers end-of-term event involving traditional Zulu music and dancing.

UPDATE:
i just framed them!

4  which pics do you like the best? in More Art, Less Craft: Discussion and Questions by thriftjunkie on: February 04, 2008 07:59:03 PM
hi all-
i'm in the planning stages of a new set of drawings, but i need some input in choosing my references! which of these images would you be most likely to hang on your wall? what are your top 3? i know some of the contrasting is funky- try to ignore lighting problems and look more at the pose or overall image.
if you wouldn't hang any of these on your wall, tell me that too!
p.s.- these photos were done by my amazing photog friend, adam spencer. here is his flickr account: http://flickr.com/photos/grizzledadam/

5  another portrait of lil sis (pic heavy) in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by thriftjunkie on: January 20, 2008 03:45:26 PM
as always, this is with white and black colored pencil on gray paper with black ink highlights. i really need to venture outside of my comfort zone, sigh...

for some reason, it looks a bit cartoony to me. but i think i'm happy overall. critique is ALWAYS welcome- don't be scared to tear me down, i can take it!

ok i photoshopped some colors that have been discussed here into the background. i can't exactly photoshop decoupaging, and i couldn't figure out how to quickly do checkers/houndstooth, so you'll have to imagine those ideas.

9  newest portrait- advice needed! EDIT: possible backgrounds on p. 3 (pic heavy) in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by thriftjunkie on: January 12, 2008 08:32:02 AM
this is of my gorgeous, talented sister (plus blonde wig!!!). she doesn't know i drew her- she would probably be mad. ohhh well...
i know the jacket's wonky (i took some artistic liberty to try to make it less distracting from her loverly face), i'm going to fix it when i get some time.
i need advice- what color should i make the background? originally i was thinking neon pink, but i don't know...

note: holy crap! how did i not realize that the color ref was not the same as the black and white ref? i thought the former was just a crop.

10  another oldie in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by thriftjunkie on: January 11, 2008 07:30:51 PM
this was so weird, i haven't seen this piece in 3 years, but i found it stuck to the back of something i had framed.

my favorite parts are the hair and the nose, but the skin is killin' me! it doesn't photograph well.
