1  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / A filling salad?? on: June 01, 2007 06:29:42 PM
I went to a banquet a few days ago and tried this for the first time then I recreated the magic at home   Smiley   Its kind of weird but give it a try.

Iceburg lettuce
dried cranberries
mandarin oranges in segments
pecans
crumbled feta cheese

I had it layered and tried it with 3 different salad dressings to see which was the best. I tried a cucumber ranch, italian and thousand island. I think if I had a vinegarette it wouldve been perfect but each dressing was quite distinct and delicious.

Enjoy!
2  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / Pirates and Abe Lincoln on: May 12, 2007 02:56:24 PM
My first attempt at stenciling was for my Pirates of  the Caribbean swap. This is what I made for my swap partner. It's on the left shoulder part of the shirt.

My 13 year old sister was so impressed by it that she asked me to do this one...

I have NO CLUE why she wanted Abe Lincoln but she did and she loves it. Hahaha. People ask her, why? She says cause its cool.

I guess she sure showed them  =)   Not too shabby, aye?
3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / "Fiesta" 20th birthday ((TONS of questions, long post)) on: March 29, 2007 09:21:43 PM
My younger sister is turning 20 and I had the bright idea to throw a fiesta for her. Haha. Well, now I'm cemented in. I'm hispanic so a lot of these ideas I got when I was growing up and going to family parties BUT I used to hate these parties so I blocked out a lot of paying attention. On top of that, I'm more of a "coconut" so I'm not really savvy on hispanic culture. Heh.

Anyway, I have a lot of ideas already but I don't know how to incorporate it or how I should let it flow.

My ideas so far:
Food-beans, rice, enchiladas, jalapeno poppers, macaroni (my sister loves it) carne asada, nachos, enchiladas, tater tots, grilled corn, pan dulce, horchata, salsa, watermelon and a punch bowl with frozen lime/lemon instead of ice. *We're having a lot of vegetarians over. **What else is good for veggies and carnivores??*

We're gonna have a kiddie pool full of ice with our drinks and such.

At the door I want to make a sign saying something like "Entrada de fiesta de Cecilia" ((Did I spell it right??))  **How can I do that? I saw something on DIY where the girl leather burned into a chamois cloth and tied it to big sticks to look kinda Country. Would this work??**

She wants a lot of balloons and streamers. I want to get inflatable cacti and chili lights. Anyone know where to get these besides oriental trading? ((I get the catalog in the mail. Thats where a lot of the 'stuff' idea comes from))

All the females (about 15 of us) have to wear moustaches. **What can we have the guys (bout 20) wear??**

We're gonna use our gramas old blankets (she got these when she lived in Mexico) as throws over our couches

A pinata ((a must)) filled with Tamarindo suckers, caramel apple suckers and limon 7 **What else can I throw in there??**

A friend of ours is DJing some (SP)reggaton?? and mariachi style music. **He also DJs at a bar the same night so he's leaving early. What other kind of music is suitable that we can find and play??**

Here are some things I want to do but can't figure out
I want to have a sign in/guest book as people walk in. How can I design it? What can I use?

I want to use loteria cards in some way and I don't want to hang them from the ceiling. Ideas please?

We have about 4 acoustic guitars here ((all used and in working condition)) **How can I display them so people can use them at will and not think its just part of the decor?**

Where can I find/ how can I make Tiny Paper Sombreros?

My pointHow can I flow this to incorporate greetings, eating/hanging out, dancing, pinata, cake and present opening?

4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Recon shirt on: March 07, 2007 06:51:39 PM
A gift for a friend of mine. Pardon the bra and the ... everyting  =D
5  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects / 1st attempt at M&P on: March 07, 2007 06:44:14 PM
Sweet! I did get a little crazy tho.

(L to R) Green glitter Cucumber melon, Plumeria and Oat w glitter, 2 obligatory army men plumeria with glitter, red dye w plumeria, Coffee and cheerios ((Ok, my reasoning at 3 am was coffee is supposed to "awaken" your skin cells the way it would if you drank it and I figured the cheerios would exfoliate well. It looks like a lump of tobacco  Eew. Smells good tho.)) and the last is "hot chocolate" made of cocoa powder, vanilla fragrance and stirred in sugar. Sugar = exfoliant.
6  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Be nice. It's my first tote ((no pattern)) on: March 07, 2007 06:25:56 PM
So I made this tote as a gift. I did it without a pattern and it's the first time EVER that I've made something that came out exactly how I imagined it.

It's black cordoroy with red material with white polka dots. The material is from the 60s.  =D
Inside of the bag. This is the pocket.

7  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Anyone tried making their own essential oil? on: March 05, 2007 11:48:09 PM
Has anyone tried making their own essential oils? I tried doing it tonight with oranges but I got a lot of smelly distilled water.
I used oranges we grew in our back yard and I did it according to the directions on this site:
http://homecooking.about.com/library/archive/blherb1.html

It smelled like wet dog AND I didn't get the layer of oil that it says I should see. Can anyone let me know if I did something wrong?

9  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Soap Temps on: March 02, 2007 11:48:59 AM
I want to start making soap. Ive seen a lot of things that I want to try, but they all pretty much say melt and pour. I bought some molds and things. I was wondering, when I finally get down to melting my soap, what temp does it need to be? My common sense tells me if I melt it all down and just pour it in, Im going to have a mess of melted mold and wax all over the counter. When I get my brick ((heh)) of wax, is all of that information on the container?
Thanks

10  California / California: South / Funky fake hair colors in Riverside on: February 22, 2007 08:27:56 PM
I've only been able to find KK hair in black from Sally's in front of the mall. I knew that the... Rancho Indoor Swap Meet (?) off of Van Buren had it but I think it's closed. Looking for something the way of Greens, pink, blue and purple.

Anyone know? Also, what about roving?
