NEW ORLEANS CRAFT MAFIA CELEBRATES 5 YEARS WITH "CINCO DE CRAFT MAFIOSO" PARTY ON JUNE 24!

Cinco de Craft Mafioso
New Orleans Craft Mafia's 5th Birthday Party Fiesta!
Thursday, June 24, 6pm – 10pm

Facebook event link: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=128347243854139&ref=mf

The New Orleans Craft Mafia is celebrating its first 5 years of bringing crafty alternatives to the Crescent City with a birthday bash on Thursday, June 24. The event, dubbed "Cinco de Craft Mafioso", will take place from 6pm - 10pm at The Factory, a new crafty workspace at 8314 Oak Street, which will begin teaching screen-printing classes on July 7.

Cinco de Craft Mafioso is a celebration of all things crafty. The event is free and open to all ages, and will feature free craft workshops, including t-shirt recycling and screen-printing. Bring your old t-shirts in and revamp them - we'll show you how to breathe new life into your old tees!

The event will also feature a crafty marketplace with handmade goods by members of the New Orleans Craft Mafia, as well as music and snacks. Be sure to stop by for free beer (while it lasts!) and get there early because the first 20 guests will receive a free New Orleans Craft Mafia tote bag filled with handmade goodies!

About the New Orleans Craft Mafia:
The New Orleans Craft Mafia formed in June 2005 and consists of several independent artists in a variety of handmade media: jewelry, clothing, accessories, bath & body, home decor, and more. The New Orleans Craft Mafia models itself after the original Craft Mafia in Austin, Texas, where a small group of talented ladies joined together to support each other in their crafty business endeavors. Interest grew and Craft Mafias have been popping up all over the world.

About The Factory:
From the folks that brought you SKIP N' WHISTLE, now there's THE FACTORY. After more than a year of being asked when we would start teaching screen printing classes, I'm happy to say THE TIME HAS COME! We are located next to the Maple Leaf Bar on Oak St in New Orleans and classes start July 7th. We are presently finishing up a few things inside the studio so come by Skip N' Whistle if you have questions or email thefactorynola [AT] gmail [DOT] com.

Kurtzie, I put together my own "New Orleans travel guide" awhile back on my blog.

Hopefully that will give you some "off the beaten path" ideas!

I love love love the purple and green one.  Is that one going up for sale soon in your Etsy shop?

I pretty much agree with everything manta mentioned.  Apartment prices have definitely come back down since the post-Katrina surge.  The only thing to watch out for is they just recently issued re-assessments of property taxes...many homeowners found that their rates have nearly doubled, even when the realistic value of the property hasn't gone up (our local government is notoriously corrupt, I really have no explanation other than that).  So I could see apartment prices seeing a sharp price hike once those new rates actually go into affect.  Something to watch out for, for sure.

The city is very bike friendly...most people ride cruiser style bikes...since we have no real terrain to speak of (except for killer potholes) there's not really any need for lots of fancy gears or mountain bikes.  There are quite a few good bike shops around town, plus the Bike Project in the Marigny will help you learn to repair a bike yourself.

While I'm originally from the MS Coast, about an hour away from New Orleans, I moved here permanently to go to school at Loyola, and I've been here ever since (about 5 or 6 years now).  Most of the Tulane and Loyola kids stay around the uptown area for the most part, so unless you're looking for an apartment on Broadway (which is pretty much frat row), you'll probably be okay.  Mid-city, the Marigny/Bywater, and the Lower Garden District are all great neighborhoods, and you can often get good deals on apartments in the French Quarter if that's something you're interested in.  About half of my friends live in the Quarter.

One thing to consider lately is our stupid energy bills.  There's only one local energy supplier, Entergy, and they suck.  Seriously.  I hate them.  They're a monopoly here and I feel like they charge whatever they want when it comes to electricity and gas prices.

Also, make sure you plan ahead for possible evacuations...have an emergency plan ready.  It's especially important if you have kids, pets or anything like that.  It was important pre-Katrina, but it's especially important to have plans in place these days.
5  UNITED STATES / Alabama / new event: arts & crafts holiday fair on MS Coast on: September 25, 2007 04:24:20 PM
I'm pleased and very excited to announce a new arts & crafts event I'm currently organizing, to take take place during the holidays at my mom's flea market in Pass Christian, MS.  The goal of this event is to give crafters of all backgrounds an affordable new venue in which to show and sell their work.  I want to see grandmothers selling afghans next to their grandkids who used the same crochet techniques to create skull & crossbone iPod cozies!  Most craft fairs in this area seem to be either all traditional, juried crafts or only cater to the younger crowd.  I want to create a place where all generations can shop and sell together.

This event, called Handmade Invasion, will take place during the first weekend of November and every weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas and coincide with weekly flea market offerings.  Customers will have the chance to meet the artists behind the goods, which range from fine art to handcrafted furniture and home décor to jewelry and clothing to bath & body goods, as well as gifts for children and pets.  My mom's business, The Flea Market & RV Park at Menge, has been there for over 10 years now, and it's located right on the interstate, so there is plenty of regular weekend traffic and a built-in customer base, plus I'm trying hard to get the word out far and wide about this event!

I'm trying to keep things very affordable, so that both new and experienced artists of all backgrounds can participate.  Artists and crafters interested in being part of Handmade Invasion must submit an application, but once accepted they may set up in the specially designated “handmade only zone” for the same cost as any other flea market vendor.  My hope is that this event will draw both artists and shoppers from other regions to the Mississippi Coast and provide a new opportunity for tourism and economic recovery in the area.  If the scheduled holiday event dates go well, I'm planning to turn Handmade Invasion into a recurring event throughout 2008.

8  UNITED STATES / Louisiana / New Orleans Craft Mafia contest and upcoming markets on: November 06, 2006 02:01:42 PM
Here at the New Orleans Craft Mafia, we've decided to kick start holiday giving a little early this year with our Handmade Holiday Gift-Away!  Just for signing up for our e-mail newsletter, you'll be automatically entered to win cool prizes created by NOCM members.

The Handmade Holiday Gift-away runs from November 1st through November 30th, and the winners of the three fabulous prize packages will be chosen on December 1st and announced throughout the month of December via the NOCM newsletter. A special “Loyalty Prize” will be awarded, as well, to one lucky recipient who signed up for our newsletter previous to the November 1, 2006 contest start date.

The Handmade Holiday Gift-away was conceived in appreciation of shoppers who patronize and otherwise support the indie craft artists, designers, and shop owners of the New Orleans Craft Mafia. It is also our hope to raise awareness for all our fellow artists/crafters in New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast.

“It's important to support independent businesses everywhere, but especially in these regions,” says Rachelle Matherne, owner of greenKangaroo.com and founder of the New Orleans Craft Mafia, adding that small businesses in New Orleans are struggling right now in an economic climate where big business gets governmental preference and the customer base has been cut by more than half. “We are still feeling the hurt from last year's disaster. Though it may not be in the national consciousness as much as it was before, we still need your love and support."

You can view the contents of the prize packages, read the contest rules, and enter to win here.

If you’d like to meet the members of the NOCM in person and see their crafty wares up close and personal, the group will also host a "Last Stop Shop" holiday market at The Big Top (1638 Clio Street) on Thursday, December 21 from 6-10pm. It will double as a re-Launch party, since the original Launch Party scheduled for September 2005 was curtailed by the hurricane. This is the official kick-off for monthly NOCM-sponsored craft markets, which will begin in January at The Big Top.

We are currently accepting applications for like-minded crafty guest vendors for our Holiday Market as well as the upcoming Monthly Markets.  You can apply here to be a guest vendor.  We are also always accepting applications for new members of the NOCM.
9  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: willowbarkhandmades-name critique and logo? on: September 26, 2006 01:50:19 PM
If you're going to keep the "handmades" on the end, I would suggest dropping the s, so that it's more of an adjective than a noun describing what you do.

Willowbark Handmade

If you want to do an image logo, I would do a very simple tree (a willow maybe?) drawing or image either above the company name or right behind it if the image is light enough.
10  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / Re: Honest, Blunt Opinions Please! on: September 18, 2006 12:58:07 PM
I was actually about to say the same thing about the close-up pictures.  Some of them are too close, or at kind of distorted angles so it's hard to tell exactly what you're looking at.

As far as pictures go, it might help to have some pictures of you or someone else actually modeling the bags, so you have a better idea of the size of them?  Also on that note, there are no measurements listed for any of the bags that I saw, which is something that is often important when shopping for bags online.
