11  Re: needed a dress quickly!!!! no spare cash!!! so i made one :D (big pics) in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by SamJ on: August 16, 2008 02:52:28 PM
the actual pattern for the top half  is new look 6160

the shape to the cowl neck is really simple when you realize how its done

part a and part be is folded down the smaller line (the one ive paint jobbed on) shoulder strap arrow to bottom arrow  the arm holes are sewn together
if your look at the piece then you have quite a weird shape for a top

and turn the right way  then you sew the sides to the back piece (which looks normal lol) and when you sew the straps together (look at the first pic to see where the straps are if a little confused) the straight neck goes into a v shape to create the cowl neck look

hope that helps anyone who was interested Grin

12  needed a dress quickly!!!! no spare cash!!! so i made one :D (big pics) in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by SamJ on: August 16, 2008 04:12:50 AM
heres a quick back story
on wednesday i found out i was invited to my MIL's leaving do (well a girly night out)
it was such short notice i had no spare cash to go and buy a dress (im not a dress person but i thought why not) i had this huge stash of black stretch material so i thought id make myself something to wear

i didnt have a dress pattern Embarrassed  so i had to use my skills to the best and i had a top pattern i liked. then added my own skirt pattern made to my measurements. heres the one i used  http://www.lovetosew.com/patternmakingskirt.htm

my pattern pieces front back and skirt

i placed the top and skirt on material and marked around it

front

back

i was gonna deal with the drape of the bottom of the skirt last hence theres no shape to it, as soon as i cut out the pices and had sewn it together i knew i was going to be too long so i had to take about three inches from the bottom and i still think its to long for 'going out on the town'  but its great for formal wear or even a wedding.

so heres the end results

this one has the black flower i added to the belt

i am so going to make some more of these maybe some that are a bit shorter with different styles on the top and in lots of different colours  Grin

hope you like as much as i do
